KILLEEN About 30 Killeen residents quickly gathered Tuesday afternoon to drown out four members of a fringe Kansas church who arrived at Fort Hood to protest the soldiers killed in Thursdays shootings.
The members were from an organization known for picketing at public events and funerals, often those related or peripherally related to gay people or soldiers in the military. On Tuesday, the members stood just outside Fort Hood carrying signs that said things such as Thank God for dead soldiers and God sent the shooter.
Heather Baker, a Killeen resident whose husband is deployed to Iraq, was eating at a nearby Dennys with a friend when she saw the protests.
We saw these protesters out here, and we said We cant stand for that, Baker said. So we went to Wal-Mart and got signs, and weve been here ever since.
The residents were carrying American flags and carrying make-shift signs that said We support our troops.
They drew constant honking from passing cars, and numerous soldiers came by to give hugs and thanks to the residents.
It means a lot because sometimes as soldiers we forget how much people love and support us, said Sgt. First Class Christie Garcia. After something as horrific as this, this re-inspires and re-engerizes us to do what we do.
After about an hour and a half, the four protesters left with heavy police protection as they walked to their car past several angry soldiers.
Just a guess: Westboro Baptist Church?
Yes, it’s them.
Yep. My DIL told me they were there.
The only reason they haven’t been Wacoed is that they are not true believers.
They are leftist tools.
Where are the homicidal jihadists when we really need them?
The strain the military is required to endure is unimaginable.
So westbough baptist are muzzies?
They are lucky the good citizens of Killeen didn’t tear them from limb to limb. The people of this area are tight with Ft. Hood.
Gee whiz Jeremy, why can't you name the bastards? It's Westboro Baptist Chruch, spreading their message of good will to all.
BTY, don't visit the WBC web site. Gets bright red doughnuts from Web of Trust on Google.
And if you don't know what Web of Trust is, go get it here and surf much safer.
I was surprised they didn’t name them either in the article. I’m not so sure the TV reports named them either. The entire protest didn’t go well for them.
One of these days Phelps and his “church” are gonna piss off someone who has nothing to lose and I’m going to have a hard time wiping the grin off my face when it happens.
Me and you both:)
That's the key to it. Apparently, they make a fortune out of the US legal system, which allows them to sue anyone who gives them a hiding.
Back in the late 90s, when they used to mock the funerals of men who had died of AIDS, an understandably upset brother of the deceased went over a punched one of them. He himself was a southern Christian, a small-town person on a limited income, who faced the heartbreak of going over to S.F. to attend his brother's funeral. The subsequent lawsuit meant that he nearly lost his home - people in the community had to take up a collection for him - knowing that he had been taunted beyond what anyone could stand.
Westboro protest ends:
4 red stains in the grass and a 911 call = happy ending.
It would be a shame if a high-pressure fire hose with a few pounds of rough gravel in it got turned on them by accident
Dag nabbit we're fresh out of "troubled" Muslim psychiatrists ready to go on a shooting rampage.
Man. They look more inbred than the kid from Deliverance.
