I can’t cite it off the top of my head, but it did happen.
And its not made its way into the history books.
I got the story off a British Regimental page which had a lot of historical diary writings. I think it was the Black Watch or some such.

The mutiny happended. The pig fat was untrue, but subvercive muslims spread they rumor. It lead to the Black Hole of Calcutta.
