Top Democrat (Hoyer): House Will Pass Health Bill (AARP Endorsement)

Majority Leader Steny Hoyer Says Passage Will Come Saturday; AARP Announces Support for Legislation

(AP) The second-ranking House Democrat predicted that historic health care legislation will be passed Saturday as the AARP, the nation's premier lobbying group for the elderly, announced it was signing on to the bill.

Rep. Steny Hoyer said House leaders expect to have the 218 votes needed to pass the sweeping bill, which would extend coverage to tens of millions of uninsured people and ban insurance companies from turning people away. President Barack Obama has the health care overhaul the defining social goal of his young administration. Hoyer acknowledged that the vote could be tight, and he said his prediction of passage is predicated on the expectation that a couple remaining obstacles can be surmounted.

"I wouldn't refer to it as a squeaker, but I think it's going to be close," Hoyer said. "This is a huge undertaking."

The Maryland Democrat said language on abortion and illegal immigrants was still being worked out, but predicted those issues could be solved in time for Saturday's scheduled debate and vote on the 10-year, $1.2 trillion legislation.

"We certainly have well over 218 people who say they want to vote for the bill," Hoyer said in an interview with wire service reporters.

"The trick is making sure they have a comfort level with the provisions they are particularly focused on to allow them to do so," he said. "So I think that's what we're in the final stages of trying to get to."

This will not help the bill. It will hurt the AARP.

In the movie Gettysburg General Lee says this quote:

“General, soldiering has one great trap: to be a good solider you must love the army. To be a good commander, you must be willing to order the death of the thing you love. We do not fear our own death you and I. But there comes a time...”

Pelosi, Reid, the people who run AARP, etc are like the commander Lee is referring too. The army is the party or their organization but the war they are fighting is too move this country towards socialism and to achieve this “victory” they have to sacrific the “army” so be it.

So glad I got out of AARP when I did. I joined at age 50, but I didn’t like their entitlement mentality, among other things. Besides, their insurance rates and travel discounts weren’t all that great. I could do better elsewhere.

The only conclusion I can draw regarding our Congress’ complete disregard for the majority of the American public being against this bill, is that our Government has been hijacked by Marxists determined to destroy our freedom, no matter how unpopular.

They don’t have the balls to do it. They will huff, and they will puff, but they will not blow the house down. Its a game of chicken between Patriots and Socialists, and the Socialists are going to turn away first like the cowards they are.

I guarantee you, next week the bill will still be in the house with claims that it will pass next (fill in the blank.)

I’d like to know what’s holding them up—if they are AARP members and they oppose this tyranny—why haven’t they already canceled? What more needs to happen?

I can’t believe this country. Maybe I shouldn’t be surprised considering the indoctrination more than a generation has received, but I just can’t believe that people are so willing to so easily give away their freedom—and they need to understand, that’s exactly what they’re doing—for a bit of security, and a negligible one at that. A nation that was founded on freedom and self-reliance, and people are ready—even willing—to just throw it away to be slaves of a “benign” tyranny.

Did my part-dropped AARP and joined a different “senior” group.

Of course I did that LAST time they endorsed it. AARP agrees with DBDP. (death by death panel)

Didn’t you get the memo? Individuals are not capable of making decisions on such important issues as this. Only union bosses and leftist organization leaders are qualified to make decisions that directly affect your lives.

AARP has always been a left wing anti-American organization and this really proves that!

What alternative(s) to AARP do you recommend? My mother is STILL with AARP and I'd like to give her some good alternatives so she can dump them already!!!

Their email is: aarpmagazine@aarp.org. I wrote them and will continue to do so. So can you. They need to hear about their betrayal of seniors like myself at age 70!

I’m not endorsing the ASA (American Seniors Assoc.) although I did join them a couple of months ago, it might be worth your while if you are thinking of dumping AARP (which I did 5 years ago) to check them out and then you can decide for yourself.

As an incentive, rather than just tear up your AARP Card, if you send it to ASA and join, you will get second year membership free.
