Fort Collins boy in loose aircraft (6 yr old boy found hiding at home not in balloon)
Denver Post ^ | October 15, 2009 | Kieran Nicholson

Rescuers are tracking and chasing a "homemade flying saucer" that is in flight with a 6-year-old, by himself, on board.

The incident started this morning in Fort Collins when the boy got into the balloon-like device, which was built by an adult, and it came loose from a tether, according to the Larimer County Sheriff's Office.

The contraption could rise as high as 10,000 feet, the sheriff's office said.

The home-made flying saucer was last seen in flight over Weld County.

The sheriff's office is working the Federal Aviation Administration to determine how to best get the boy down.

If it was a hoax, then it’s a crime. If the boy is dead, then a full investigation will be held.

Always preserve a potential crime scene, even if you aren’t sure an acutal crime was committed. You can’t get it back.

He's probably too young to think this up, but he ought to pretend he's taking a nap, so his parents can find him like this.

Thats what I always did when I was in trouble, or running from the law.

Per Fox (switching back and forth with MSNBC- they’re covering this pretty well) the area in Laramie County where people thought they saw something fall out is being searched and so far nothing has been found..

Maybe, maybe not. I’m skeptical of anything that has anything to do with anyone associated with any reality television show. Normal, well-adjusted people just don’t volunteer themselves to be a part of such freak shows.

If this is real, my heart goes out to them. But I can’t get past my doubts right now.

The sheriff’s department has searched the house twice and confirmed the boy is not hiding there. They are interviewing the brother to see if he is covering for the boy.

"Some physicist needs to figure out based on how high it went if it could have lifted off with the 50 pound load."

I'm guessing that there's more than a few people at the nearby Air Force Academy that could figure that out very quickly.

I seriously doubt the boy was in the balloon. The balloon didn’t even look like it could carry 40-50lbs of weight.

I'm not buying it either right now. At that age when I was in big trouble I'd hide under the bed. Then I'd usually fall asleep. Slept pretty good for some reason too. Despite the dust bunnies and missing socks and stuff.

It will also get colder and the gas being used for lift will get colder and provide less lift.

I'll help you out here:

Dictionary: gon·do·la (gŏn'dl-ə, gŏn-dō'lə)

3. A basket, enclosure, or instrument sling suspended from and carried aloft by a balloon.

The Heene family from Colorado live life on the edge. Wife Mayumi (43) and storm scientist Richard (45) take their three kids, Bradford (8), Ryo (7) and Falcon (5), out of school to go on storm chasing missions to prove Richard’s theories about magnetic fields and gravity. If conditions are right, Mayumi wakes her family by shouting “Storm Approaching, Storm Approaching!” into a bullhorn. The family sleep in their clothes so they can leap out of bed and into the storm-mobile. Richard calls Mayumi his ‘ninja wife’; she maintains equipment, drives the storm-mobile, films tornadoes and waits with the kids while Richard jumps on his motorbike, heads into the eye of the storm and launches rockets to measure magnetic forces. At home the family are as chaotic as a twister: the kids have no table manners and throw themselves around the house, and while Richard devotes every moment to his research, he expects Mayumi to cook, clean and run the house without any help.

BTW (all) isn’t Shepard Smith about the biggest a-hole on television? He just has-to try to get a laugh no matter how serious the story.

Me either. I'm now watching One Life To Live and popping back to FOXNEWS during commercials.

I really should be doing something constructive though. I have painting to do, carpets to clean, lunch to eat, cats to feed, dogs to water...
