Sima Samar, women's rights activist in Afghanistan: "With dogged persistence and at great personal risk, she kept her schools and clinics open in Afghanistan even during the most repressive days of the Taliban regime, whose laws prohibited the education of girls past the age of eight. When the Taliban fell, Samar returned to Kabul and accepted the post of Minister for Women's Affairs."
Ingrid Betancourt: French-Colombian ex-hostage held for six years.
"Dr. Denis Mukwege: Doctor, founder and head of Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo. He has dedicated his life to helping Congolese women and girls who are victims of gang rape and brutal sexual violence."
Handicap International and Cluster Munition Coalition: "These organizations are recognized for their consistently serious efforts to clean up cluster bombs, also known as land mines. Innocent civilians are regularly killed worldwide because the unseen bombs explode when stepped upon."
"Hu Jia, a human rights activist and an outspoken critic of the Chinese government, who was sentenced last year to a three-and-a-half-year prison term for 'inciting subversion of state power.'"
"Wei Jingsheng, who spent 17 years in Chinese prisons for urging reforms of China's communist system. He now lives in the United States."

It’s straight up racism that there were other people to even consider.
Which is why it will backfire on the Libs in 2010. Maybe the Nobel Committee unknowingly did us a favor.
Yes, but did any of those fine people inspire a feeling of "hope" or "change", in the manner that Barry was able to do?
Don't think so.
Thanks for posting this list, and it shows how each person is head and shoulders above Obama in terms of qualifications and achievement. It is an insult to these hero’s and many, many others (not listed) who were far more deserving and relevant to peace in this world.
Tragically, the Nobel leadership JUST DOESN’T GET IT.
Right. Now it's on par with the Pulitzer.
I read about the Afghan woman. She is risking death to do what she does.
Barry doesn’t have the heart that woman does. How embarrassing for the “Nobel” committee that their award isn’t noble.
If you read thru the list, and read about all of the also-rans, you will not find a single one who is promoting Hope and Change. These are people who instead, have spent their lives actually implementing Hope and (positive) Change.
Excellent post. It makes me want to cry. Everything in Al Gore’s little power point was a LIE.
If your premise for Norway's decision is correct, the Nobel no longer awards extraordinary individual achievement, charity or excellent contributions to the advancement of humanity and “hope and change” are now code words for world socialism/fascism ruled by a few corrupt leftist individuals who award each other for like minded thinking.
Affirmative action peter principle beyond measure.
.
Yep,He sure has got it going on except one major item.CREDIBILITY.
I hear ya...
I agree with your comments. I also note your height and remember that my first wife was 4’ 11 and 3/4” tall. Her big goal in life was to make 5’. She didn’t make it. I’m just teasing. She was a cutie.
Her sister was actually 4’ 8” tall, so she was the tall one. ;-)
Mother Teresa
Well considering who recieved this “award” in the past, (Roosevelt, Wilson, Carter, need I say more?)
most of these people at the very least the anti-communist guy, would have turned this award down anyway.
I agree that awarding him the Nobel was ridiculous. I was just trying to be sarcastic.
