I’d encourage Matthew not to take this too personally. The actions of the school administrators say much more about them and their mindless bureaucracy than it does about him.
They are disarming America too!
Now you all pick up your baseball bats and go play outside."
But that's what fingers are for!
In just about every one of these "zero tolerance" cases gone wild there is almost always a stupid woman principal in charge.
Well spoken. That Eagle Scout might have used that 2” blade to cut the seatbelt of someone trapped in an overturned car! We can't have that!
When I was in school, half the cars in the parking lot had guns in them...hunting rifles and shotguns. You couldn’t bring one in to the building, of course, but all you had to do was look out the front window of the high school and you’d see rows of battered old pickups with rifles and shotguns firmly seated in gun racks in the back windows.
Of course, that was in rural Virginia in the early 1980s, where the first day of deer season every November was cause for about half the student body to skip...mostly excused, with notes from their parents saying “I’m taking so-and-so hunting today.”

Suggest that students in the school begin calling the police with complaints that they are afraid of ordinary items being used as weapons: books, chairs, pens and pencils, belts, etc.
Have the students make these calls consecutively throughout the school day, starting about an hour apart. Figure out how long it takes for the administration and police to process a single complaint, and adjust the timeline accordingly so the police get about 10 minutes away from the school before the next complaint gets called in.
When the threats of punishment for "false reporting" start coming from the authorities, the students should complain that they fell threatened by the dangerous and oppressive atmosphere with so many potential weapons around, and increase the amount of complaints. And always mention the zero tolerance policy.
I predict that the student will be able to shut down the school inside of a week.
And the more students that become involved, the less likely anyone will be (further) prosecuted -- including this impressive young man. And the sooner this zero-tolerance policy will be removed.

- Buy 50 cheap knives
- Wait for a hot day
- Go to the parking lot and find cars with any windows cracked open to prevent heat buildup
- Insert knife, letting it fall into plain sight inside the car
- Notify police that a large number of students and administrators are in violation
- Repeat as necessary
Lets do the Chicagowanda test - if you are black honor roll student in Chicago, which instrument presents the greatest threat:
A. Railroad Tie
B. Tire Iron
C. Pocket Knife
D. Glock 9mm
This test will be graded on a curve so that nobodies self esteem will be molested.
“the navy to port” HEY!
Be certain your godson applies to WPoint as he planned, and states clearly what occurred. I suspect that the admissions board will see this as a positive instead of a negative incident.
Just when you think public schools couldn’t be more absurd, they outdo themselves.
I actually teach at West Point. I forwarded the article to my boss who has friends at admissions. He is going to try to make them aware of the issue and hopefully this incident can be put in context and waivered if necessary. They will still have to make their own determination of course.
Hehe. I like how you think. ;-)
These school officals are complete idiots.
Bless you!
Awesome!
Ridiculous...
...and why would the school go into the young mans car without cause? Do they have that much time on their hands? This one size fits all mentality is why I detest the Feds and their useful dupes meddling in my life.
It may have been presented in a way to seem like a good idea but its effect is to relieve administrators of any room for considering the individual situations, any room for common sense. There was a one-size-fits-all solution, period. That is the way with most bureaucracies.
... and the unintended consequences have been atrocious.
Liberal policies always seem to be plagued with unintended consequences. After 70+ years of consistently unintended consequences resulting from liberal policies sooner or later one must conclude the consequences were intended after all.
This stretches ANY reasonable sanity about a “zero tolerance” policy in schools and is plainly another absurd example of government (federal, state or local) control getting out of hand.
