BERLIN (Reuters) - Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives appear to have won enough votes in a German election to form a center-right government with their preferred partners, the Free Democrats (FDP), exit polls showed on Sunday.
An exit poll from ZDF television put support for Merkel's conservative bloc -- her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU) -- at 33.5 percent and showed the FDP on 14.5 percent. A poll for ARD television gave the center-right an even clearer win.

“Together, their total exceeded that of the other three main parties combined, putting Merkel on track for a second term and suggesting she will be able to end her awkward “grand coalition” with the rival Social Democrats (SPD).”
Center-Right in Europe means Barney-Frank-like.

Could be right. But better than socialism in France and Germany...and indeed at least an image challenge to bammy’s crew...just like Sarkozy challenging bammy’s actions on Iran and North Korea. Result is good, imho.
True.
How about that, a conservative woman leading the way for the center-right party. If Merkel can do it, and Thacher has, why can’t we here in the States.
The FDP (European “Liberal”) is deemed “right” and is pro-Capitalism and socially liberal. Social policies of Barney Frank, economic policies of Milton Friedman.
The CDU/CSU governs better when in coalition with the Free Democrats.
I’d like to see her show up in Poland with Bolton.
Maybe you can comment a bit more on this - I’ve heard it said that Germany and France (and possibly some of the other European nations) were very conservative, fiscally, through the recession. They didn’t do the bailouts, money printing, currency devaluing crap that D.C. did. And while they do things like nationalized healthcare, their regulations are geared as much towards assisting commerce as just being protective of consumers.
I’ve noticed my European mutual fund has done very well lately, which makes me think they’re getting something that D.C. does not. Sound about right? I’m far from an expert on Europe but there are things they seem to figure out that we miss.
Once again it seems Europe is moving Right while the US is moving the other way under Comrade Obama. Heaven forfend Conservatives even have to return there to escape socialism!
Germany and France did bailouts and Keynesian spending etc. they were always much more etatist and big government than we are. Healthcare is nationalised since over a century.
The whole political area is much more to the left than here.
Their “conservatives” are for “social capitalism” and at best like some “blue dog” democrats here.
The German “liberals” are like our “moderate RINOS”. Pro-business, anti-big government, anti-taxes. But at the same time socially liberal like our Democrats.
The new German Government will be more pro-Free Market than the previous. And more pro-Free Market than Obama anyway. But Germany’s system will still be pretty etatist and leftist as a whole, because it’s been always that way.
Das ist gut.
I see. While I’m a Libertarian, I’d prefer the European system over the back door destruction of our currency to some extent. At least you can SEE taxes, even if they’re onerous. What the Fed has done is basically steal our money by devaluation, increasing their power (without actually increasing wealth). This is unsustainable, of course, but that it’s lasted so long is hard to believe at times.
Hmmm...on the other hand, our gov’t has become anti-business, anti-free market, pro-tax, and not actually socially liberal but socially fascist. By socially fascist, I mean they don’t want us to just accept behavior that we may disapprove of, but they want us to subsidize and approve of it. I know they do a bit of this in Europe too, but for some reason it seems more sinister here.
The dem agenda is more sinister here, because they want to force things on us that are already established mainstream in Europe, which no one seriously challenges (abortion, political correctness, gun control, nat. health care).
