The Sheriff’s department was inept and borderline corrupt under Sherman Block. The change of leadership at top may have helped.
I remember the late Sheriff Sherman Block when I lived in California. He was extremely hostile to the Second Amendment.
Gang members shot dead? Back in the 1980’s, the LAPD used to call these types of incidents NHI....”No Human Involved.”
Or the illegals have spread out to states with lower unemployment and less developed methods of dealing with the problems they bring.
Dallas statistics look pretty bad.
So L.A. has gone from being a “Combat Zone” to just being a “Police Action Zone” ?
I still doubt that it’s safe to walk the streets in South Central.
This is just like my hometown of Jackson Mississippi, the totally corrupted black police force is useless.
You want help...call the county Sheriff.
LACSD jurisdiction is one of the largest in the world.
I would look to the LAPD and the ajointing cities that have their own PD’s.
Having grown up in the area and worked with the LACSD, I can say they are the best, but they seem spread pretty thin in the suburbs at times.
Still, both they and the LAPD use field team tactics that are the finest anywere on earth. Very disiplined radio chatter with supervisor cars and deputy squads of 5 cars or more each in the field have got to be very intimidating to the bad guys.
Once they have you zeroed, there is no escape.
That is exactly the type of attitude that has dramatically reduced crime in this region.
No wonder so many small town "hipsters" love to move to New York or places like Silver Lake in LA: the big city is now safer than the second and third tier "urban areas."
Remember the newsman’s credo: If it bleeds, it leads. The media love to cover every little gang slaying/murder as it draws people to their televisions. You don’t win ratings doing stories about reduced crime and safer streets.
Compared to California, Maryland looks like Somalia. Check the murder stats. lol...

I wonder how much of the drop is due to reduced reporting of crime? If the cops don’t show up to take a report, the crime doesn’t show up in the stats.
A friend of mine lives in the Oakland Hills. Her house was burglarized and the cops refused to even show up to take a report. No report, no crime, better crime statistics.
However, the cops just arrest, prosecuters put them away. We’ve already seen what the best LACO prosecuters and jurys can do with guilty folk (”cough, “O.J.”)
With a trend this strong, I’m curious about a underlying demographic trend as well. I’ve not sure what it could be to be this large.

Many of the illegals have left the cities and are now working for the cartels in the rural areas where they’re growing dope.
Crime sure isn’t down in my rural California county, it’s all the Sheriff can do to keep up with the aliens.

That was a celebrity aberration.
Fact is California has three strikes, with some of the toughest criminal sentencing laws found *anywhere* in this country.
I personally hope construction and new development stays down. It's not needed anyway.
But just remember, crime in Southern California has been dropping for about 10 years now, long before the economic down turn started 3 years ago.
How does that work with things like murder and armed robbery?
