Happy Birthday, US Constitution!

On September 17, 1787, the supreme law of the United States was adopted by its people. Signed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the US Constitution was ratified by conventions in each state, in the name of “The People”. So durable are its words that it is the oldest written constitution in the world.


This preordained parchment laid forth the three branches of our government: a bicameral Legislative Congress; an executive branch led by the President; and a judicial branch headed by the Supreme Court.

Of the 4,543 words in the Constitution, perhaps none are more powerful or more poignant of the true reason our Republic exists than those found in our Preamble:

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, ensure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

If you forgot to send a birthday card today, or bake a cake with 222 candles on top – no worries.

Do the next best thing – please set aside just five minutes of your day to spend some time with the old lady – the US Constitution.

As you read each word, try to fully appreciate the gift our Forefathers gave us, and why it’s so important that we “The People” must continue to protect the US Constitution for ourselves, our children and future generations who will follow in our footsteps in the centuries ahead.

The United States Constitution is the supreme legal text that forms the framework of the United States government.

Sections II and III have particular poignancy in September 2009. Read those sections again if you have time.

And trust me - celebrating our nation's Constitution by reading it is much safer than making a birthday cake with 222 candles!
