Care to elaborate...

Well, I'll try to explain it, but I'm going to meet a friend to share a bottle of wine very soon (yes, it's well after 5:00 p.m. here....hey, I do have my standards...)

OK, in the summer of 2007, another FReeper challenged me that I could get away with posting the most useless vanity I could think of and put it in Breaking News.

So, I came up with "I'm Wearing New Socks Today," as the title and even put some keywords like "hanes," "noholes" and stuff like that and posted it.

It was up about 30 seconds before it got yanked, but a few people saw it.

So, the next day, someone else posts a vanity that was every bit as idiotic and it stayed up. Therefore, we hijacked it and started having serious disussions about socks and posting pictures of all kinds of socks.

After that, we hijacked some other vanities with discussions and photos of socks and then it just morphed into its own thing.

I even had one of the Mods ping me to a vanity about a year later where someone was talking about socks and Iraq and we got all over that one as well.

I'm pretty sure that socks are never mentioned on FR these days without my getting a ping to it. ;-)

Those of you who were around when this all began, please chime in if I've left anything out.

Jim Thompson - The 'other' Jim Robinson. The incident stemmed from a hit piece by Chris Parry in the Vancouver Sun (Conservative Free Republic blog in free speech flap after racial slurs directed at Obama children). In the article Chris Parry called Jim Robinson, "Jim Thompson". joinedafterattack (see also the Gawker's report)did some investigation on Chris Parry and found that he was none other than radical left blogger "Hollywoodoz" at the Daily Kos (BOMBSHELL & FREEPER CALL TO ACTION on Daily Kos & Vancouver Sun Reporter, summary available here too). Chris Parry actually advocated attacking "negros" and blaming the republicans for it. See this post at the Daily Kos by "hollywoodoz". See it here: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/9/9/10324/92702. Chris Parry later posted to joinedafterattack's thread (click here for the post) under "ChrisParry" and confirmed the findings. Parry also state that he had multiple FreeRepublic accounts (post 767 in reply to "My hearts in London - Everett"). Parry's report culminated in MSNBC's Keith Olbermann honoring "Jim Thompson as one of his "Worst Person In The World" designees (http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2292614/posts. Unfortunately, that means, Jim Robinson never, technically never recieved said honor. Sorry, Jim, better luck next time. Since the incident, FReepers ala Sparticus have occassionally stated "I am Jim Thompson" when showing solidarity or poking fun at media screwups and ludacris hit-pieces related to FreeRepublic. I missed the actual thread, but I’ve seen many references to socks and you FR handle attached.

Does this sum it up:

Socks (2) - Ping to various mischievous FReepers/FReepettes and call to action to hijack an unsuspecting vanity or thread referencing socks. In 2007, Allegra was challenged with posting the most useless vanity and came up with "I'm Wearing New Socks Today". The post was quickly pulled but the following day someone else put up an equally useless vanity and it remained. Thus, a vindictive Allegra and friends hijacked it with serious discussions and pictures of socks. And, verily, vanities and threads referencing sock are no longer safe. (Allegra confirms)
