After more than 15 years of slime, race-baiting, misogeny and shameless self-promotion, Michael Savage is off the air in his hometown market, San Francisco.
KNEW announced his departure on its Web site, with an unsigned note from a guy who looks like he's in management, or a character from the Sopranos.
"Here's your no-spin direct answer; we have decided to go in a different philosophical and ideological direction, featuring more contemporary content and more local information. The Savage Nation does not fit into that vision."
Let's read between the lines. It's not hard. Savage was expensive. Clear Channel, the owner, likes to save money. Savage, despite some popularity, has not helped the station climb out of 29th place in the local ratings. Bye bye.
Add to this the fact that Savage has been doing the last hour of his show as an infomercial format and misses a lot of shows, and you have the prima donna getting the boot.
Philosophical differences? Please. The station still has Glenn Beck, who is vying for Savage's sleaze leading position; Roger Hedgecock; and some guy named Schnit, who continues the Republican party line.
What really gives you the answer is what he has been replaced with: the syndicated John and Ken show from Los Angeles, which fits the station's pattern of getting more for their cheap channel bucks. The morning affair is a syndicated SF/Sacramento show that is virtually unlistenable.
I wish I could say that this will be the last the Bay sees of Savage, but as a betting man, I predict that he will be signed by Mickey Luckoff and Jack Swanson over at KSFO, the ones who brought him to us in the first place. Those guys announced their new liberal night host John Rothmann today, and I won't be surprised if that was to offset a Savage announcement. I'd be glad to be proven wrong.
Both Savage and Mark Levin (Levin worst of all) act on the air like they were raised by wolves. Levin specializes in yelling at callers after about 10 seconds and then hanging up on them. Great monologues, but once he takes calls he makes a drunken brawl sound calm.
Still, Michael Savage was right on politically, and one of the few willing to take the fight to the Muslim Jihadists infiltrating Europe and the USA.
However, Savage was particularly savage on San Francisco politicians. He focused on exposing the sheninagans of San Francisco elites.
So the yelps of the scalded dogs in S.F. is understandable.... although unacceptable as censorship.
At least Rush is amusing when he is. Savage is dead serious.
I stopped listening to Savage when it was revealed that he contributed the maximum allowable amount to the campaign of Jerry “Governor Moonbeam” Brown, a liberal Democrat who was running against a conservative Republican for attorney general of California.
Levin gets upset at liberal callers but usually treats conservative callers with respect. Savage is more “savage” to conservative callers than liberal callers.
You think anyone was listing in Sanfransicko anyway? I grow weary of his banned in Britain schtick.
I think it’s the opposite.
Savage needs to move his state income tax stream out of California. He needs to move to a no state income tax state and say “screw you, California.”
He could do his show from a boat anchored in the Carribean if he wanted to. Now there is an idea...
“Savage, despite some popularity, has not helped the station climb out of 29th place in the local ratings.”
Not surprising, when you look at the San Francisco locals.
KSFO, much more conservative than KNEW, has always been ranked #1 or close. How do you explain that?
If I wanted to listen to the loud mouth at the end of the bar, I would go down to my local tavern, so I could at least get cold beer and peanuts with it. And that is all what Savage is.
Brad Kava is a tool. He prefers Air America and the call letter deficient station up the dial.
Savage has promoted hiw books. Big deal everyone else is charging to have ‘special access’ and for their ‘gear’. Savage wasn’t my favorite but I will take him over jon and Ken any day.
Wrong he has more ratings than most other radio talkers. You obviously don’t know what you are talking about
Unlike Rush Limbaugh, right?
I agree, Savage’s self aggrandizing is not like Limbaugh’s self aggrandizing.
“KSFO, much more conservative than KNEW, has always been ranked #1 or close. How do you explain that?”
I’m not in the area, so I’m not knowledgeable on the subject, beyond knowing there are a lot of folks with alternate lifestyles in San Francisco. But the majority? I don’t know.
I’ll take a stab at an answer and see what you think. The conservatives are listening to the radio to get away from the Mainstream media, the TV?
Well, I’m not telling you or anyone who to like or dislike, I simply responded to the other guy’s post about Savage having no ratings. Because he actually has a rather large audience.
And I’ll take Savage over the middle-of-the-road milque-toast types like Bill O’Reilly any day of the week. Savage may miss his mark from time to time, but most of the time he chooses the correct mark and fires away.
Next tier not even close? Levin is gaining on him and beat savage in the SF Bay area in the same time slot. Maybe it’s because Levin is actually live for 3 hours while Savage has 3 hours but is only live for one.
Unlistenable??? Armstrong and Getty can be hilarious and the show is very good. But not a surprising opinion, since it comes from the Examiner
