After two successive elections that have exposed the Republican Party to ridicule for its lack of diversity and narrow demographic appeal, the GOP suddenly finds itself with an unexpected bounty.
From the West Coast to the East Coast, in some of the smallest and largest states in the nation, the party is currently fielding an unusually diverse crop of serious statewide candidates drawn from the seemingly endless list of constituencies the GOP lost in 2008notably women, Latinos, African Americans, Asian Americans and young people.
Electing just a few of these prospects would give the party a dramatic facelift and go a long way toward addressing its long-running diversity deficit, though it may not alter any of the underlying ideas that may be contributing to the gap.
Under the right conditions, the GOP could end up in 2011 with female governors in the two largest states in the nationCalifornia and Texas. Or with a black senator from Texas, an Hispanic female governor in New Mexico, a Colorado governor in his early 30s and two Indian American governors in the Deep Southone of them female.

If we get into democrat style nose counting we truly are sunk.
“Who gives a sh** what they look like. Are they for our founding principles embodied in our divinely inspired Constitution or aren’t they?
If we get into democrat style nose counting we truly are sunk. “
Perfect!
Well said, all.
Well good for them! After 30 yrs as republicans, the hubby & I just this week changed our voter registration to unaffliated. Until the GOP returns to being conservative I want no part of them.
Let's run & elect Conservatives who believe in small government, will adhere to the Constitution and represent the people.
There is plenty of diversity in Washington - which proves it does not make good government. If they have no common sense, it doesn't matter what color or background they come from. They need to be put out to pasture to save our country.
Wrong. Don’t worry about color of candidates or voters, concentrate on conservative issues.
Non-white governors record isn’t very keen at this time.
While drunk on your own self righteous clarity you are blissfully unaware of your own bigotry to make such an statement.
And to use Wash Post Politico like some revelation.
Since when are we supposed to choose candidates by the COLOR OF THEIR SKIN?! Liberals keep changing the ‘rules’ and we keep playing along. GET OUT OF OUR BUSINESS!
Up yours race hustler!
I care what people think, not what they look like.
ah there's the run....see, you fall for identity politics same as crackers do.
why is it ok for you to be latino and proud but I as a southern white boy have to embrace diversity for diversity's sake?
spoken by someone once married to a latino and who has raised two daughters from said ex wife , neither of whom embrace diversity compulsiveness
i will grant you though that folks tend to seek their own the world over, only in the west do we attempt to include everyone ad nauseum but the majority..why?...who knows it's like a malaise ..like some widespread medieval ergot panic
but if you must , you could always moved to Miami and hang out with older generation Cubans and Colombians and Nicaraguans...when I lived there I found them to be very conservative. then they ran Miami more than any other group
Perhaps we should go back to the days of segregated schools so that we can ‘care what people think’ from opposite sides of town.
Maybe that’s your goal since you’re the one focused race and not ideas.....
but why is that?
outside of south Florida and parts of Texas, the vast majority of them vote just like blacks
conservative folks should not have to be pandered to
regardless of race if you believe in God, hate infanticide, believe in the second amendment, fiscal discipline, strong foreign policy and think traditional families rule then you know where you're home is...
The choice is so stark and the GOP loves latinos who share their views and who can win elections
The rub is immigration because most latinos including Cubans think first with identity as latino rather than American and simply wish amnesty for fellow latinos even though any heritage line outside language from Cubans or Colombians to Mexicans is laughable.
So if they vote for skin-ethnicity over common sense then who's the bigot. Them or folks that want a secure border and manageable legal immigration?
You tell me?
schools are segregated....but by income or choice
go to any majority black urban area in the south and count on two hands how many white kids go to public school?
why none....because it’s very dangerous physically and the schools are veritable cesspools
you will find the same thing with wealthier latinos zoned for majority black schools
in my hometown, rich blacks go to private school for the same reason
you’re drank all the koolaid that you are a victim...I hope you get over it
I wouldn’t call wanting more Hispanics to get involved in politics “identity politics”. I have never suggested specifically specifically favoring Hispanics in any way. And I never suggested you can’t identify with other southern whites, I don’t understand why every time I admit to having a race (which, by the way, I don’t really identify with; I identify strongly with Puerto Ricans and that is an important part of my identity, but not with Hispanics or Latinos in general) some white person confronts me about how he can’t identify as a white person. YOU CAN. I don’t care and I won’t stop you.
As for Miami, I typically get along better with whites than with Cubans in practice, and I have a job and family here in Boston. I’m willing to stay here in spite of the Democrats’ relentless rule over the state and local politics, though it pains me to have neighbors who voted for Obama and Kennedy and Kerry and Patrick and their ilk.
you are the one starting the thread about the GOP needing folks of color
and I gave my two cents about the realities
well if you are a Puerto Rican conservative then family get togethers must be like it is for conservative Jews..lol
i often wonder why Puerto Ricans are so democrat deopendent
I guess settling mostly in NYC and the politics of the island
the lighter skinned Puerto ricans much like Dominicans and other Caribbean baisn latinos tend to be more conservative than the more Afro-latino
sure always looked that way to me....
Cuba was the “whitest” latino nation in the Caribbean area once and now they are all here. Cuba today is much different demographically than in 1959.
and yes....the are rather presumido...besto
don’t feel bad....Nashville proper is 60% white, 25% black and 10% illegals
they voted 75% for Obama overall which means a lot of stupid whites voted for Bro
Well, my parents have passed, and my wife is white. I do see my two sisters regularly, but we do not talk politics, and my more distant relatives are all still in Puerto Rico so I don’t have much opportunity to have reunions with them though I do see them occasionally.
Growing up and living in Puerto Rico is part of why I became a conservative: I saw the extent of corruption and ineffective government and dependence on welfare. Puerto Rico is a society that is dependent on government, and more specifically, dependent on aid from the United States federal government. It is a sad situation.
Puerto Rican politics don’t really revolve around Democrats and Republicans; the political parties are about independence vs. statehood vs. status quo vs. effective governance. The balance of power basically depends on how the 2% of people who favor independence vote in any particular election. It’s all very stupid. The governor is Republican, and the unions are mad at him for trying to cut spending on administrative waste by firing some cushy union jobs. The secretaries have secretaries. Puerto Rico is in a sad state and I suspect it won’t change any time soon.
