Grist's David Roberts has done a service to journalism by taking some time to help clear the air around Van Jones, special advisor for green jobs, enterprise and innovation at Council on Environmental Quality. Ever in search of a bogeyman, Glenn Beck, among others, has tried to paint Jones as some sort of evil mastermind, conspiring to make the U.S. the new U.S.S.R. by championing green jobs. Roberts' debunking deserves a look, especially after Beck again went after Jones on his Fox show Tuesday night. Watch the clip above to see Beck's feeble, paranoid mind at work. In this clip he attacks Jones for his social justice work.
Beck, ever allergic to facts, has painted Jones, the man who helped create the Apollo Alliance and Green for All, as communist/black militant/ex con who is bent on undoing the American system from within. As Roberts points out, Beck has mislead the public on at least three crucial points.
Jones is not a criminal: While at Yale Law School, he volunteered as a legal monitor at a protest following the Rodney King trial. Jones was detained at the rally but was let go after four hours. He was never convicted of a felony. If he was, he would have a hard time getting past the California Bar.
Jones is not the green jobs czar. There is no such thing. His title is special advisor for green jobs, enterprise and innovation at Council on Environmental Quality. If he was the green jobs czar, however, there would be no shame in that title. It was Richard Nixon who began the trend of naming czars, appointing a drug czar, Jerome Jaffe, in 1971. Reagan continued the trend by naming his own drug czar. Surely Beck doesn't believe Nixon and Reagan were communists or Nazi sympathizers, does he?
Jones is not a communist. I'm not even going to explain this. It's too silly even to justify a moment's thought.
Beck is a demagogue and Rupert Murdoch should consider taking him off the air. Sponsors are already jumping ship, but instead of taking that as a sign that playing loose with the facts is wrong, Beck has instead chosen to continue to spread lies and create straw men in place of helping educate his viewers about the real environmental threats we face. Shame on Beck.
In 2005 Jones told the East Bay Express that the acquittal of Rodney King’s assailants in 1992 in that infamous police brutality case changed him significantly. “I was a rowdy nationalist on April 28th, and then the verdicts came down on April 29th,” he said. “By August, I was a communist.”
Maybe they’ve figured out people would prefer to listen to him rather than his guests. Only speaking for myself, and I’m not a huge fan, but one of the things I didn’t like about his set up was that there were too many guests and not enough time. I actually like it better with fewer guests. But, it’s certainly your prerogative to be concerned and all.
So who shall we believe this guy or Van Jones own words that he’s now come out to apologize for.
Van Jones was the person who said he became a communists after the Rodney King beating. Maybe the writer knows more about Mr. Jones than Mr. Jones knows about himself...
This is just fatuous and desperate spin. Jones is condemned by HIS OWN WORDS. Beck didn’t “make up” anything.
vaudine
What is Beck to the author if not a "bogeyman"?
re: wondering about indoctrination...did you see the fellow on O’Reilly last night with Laura.....the Black guy who kept saying...”van jones is not a communist” and Laura and the other gal (a Black gal) kept saying....HE SAID IT HIMSELF.....he would not go off point!
Oh! politics today is such a bore!
Here we have Van Jones on the stake for some bad things that he said about being a communist, a truther, and a bigoted racist!
Why the outrage??
Life is the past was so much simplier!
Back in the sixties we had Teddy drowning his “date”. Not a real problem!
And we had Nixon’s folks stealing some political paperwork!
Big problem!!!
Then we had Irangate, where the President looked aside while good things happened.
Finally we had cigargate where a president was able to remove an “el-fragrente” from his porky girlfriend!
Eventually we have votergate, where G.W. Bush actually won over the POS Gore, who F’uk up his legal challenge.
G.W.Bush was to be a caretaker President, yet assumed character amongst the rubble of 9-11. He, and his VP Cheney, have done more for the future security of the US and our allies, than all the A-holes in congress and the current administration!
So why all the rage about Zer0? Could he not understand the US, and all it’s people? Has he been pissing in the back-alleys of Chicago so much that he has no conception of white, and black, desires for our country, our families, our friends.
???How can a ‘Hope’, ‘Change’ politician be so out of touch with Amerika???
In your link, I hate to ask one question:
The mother’s birth date : 11/29/1942
Only in the USA date format where the month is written first.
If authentic, it should have been written: 29/11/1942
How in the world would this be authentic?
The other dates below, the supervisor signed a day (USA) or a month (European) BEFORE the doctor!
I hope I’m wrong, somehow.
Also troublesome, the weight and length would be in metric.
Hey man, where you been?? Dang, you’re GOOD!!
The British used inches, always. Only after the creation of the European Community business, the metric system was adopted and it's now the International norm.
Pardon my youth. Thank you. :)
Pardon my maturity and you’re quite welcome.
I could not believe the comments on that website. There people are suicidal.Do they think Jones loves them is they are white and on his side? Useful tools the lot of them.
Beck is doing the job the MSM should be doing. Most of what he shows are clips of the Green Czar’s own words—Were they taken out of context? He has said so many awful, unAmerican things that he will have to go—just like Rev, Wright.
