Timber Structure Older than Stonehenge Found in London
Livescience.com ^ | 13 August 2009

Archaeologists have unexpectedly uncovered London’s oldest timber structure, which predates Stonehenge by about 500 years.

The structure, apparently a platform or trackway used to make a boggy area more navigable, was found during the excavation of a prehistoric peat bog adjacent to Belmarsh Prison in Plumstead, Greenwich, in advance of the construction of a new prison building.

Radiocarbon dating has shown the structure to be nearly 6,000 years old, well before Stonehenge was erected. Previously, the oldest timber structure in Greater London was the timber trackway in Silvertown, which has been dated to 3340 to 2910 B.C., about 700 years younger than the newly discovered setup.

The platform or trackway has been buried over time and was found about 15.4 feet (4.7m) beneath two yards (meters) of peat adjacent to an ancient river channel.

Wetlands adjacent to rivers such as the Thames were an important source of food for prehistoric people, and timber trackways and platforms made it easier to cross the boggy terrain. The structure discovered at Plumstead is an early example of people adapting the natural landscape to meet human needs, researchers said.

Thanks rdl6989. Something's really wrong with FR tonight. If I'm the only one noticing problems (posts taking too long to appear, for example; topics not showing full threads, that kind of thing) please let me know by, uh, posting, uh, posting a reply...uh, well, maybe not.

If it turns out I *am* the only one experiencing this, I'll be looking for someone to take over the GGG list and my other lists, because I will be leaving FR. Thanks.

To all -- please ping me to other topics which are appropriate for the GGG list.
GGG managers are SunkenCiv, StayAt HomeMother, and Ernest_at_the_Beach

I’m having similar problems, for a long time, I kept getting “New Posts to You” and when I’d click on it, it would be the same old thing that was there the previous time.

You won't get off that easy, Civ!

Looking forward to reading the article...but yes, there’s something very strange going on, just as you said.

Thanks SunkenCiv. I was sitting here going crazy because after I posted this I thought my acct had literally been suspended. I’ve behaved myself lately so I didn’t understand why. I posted this and it disappeared but came back, then vanished again. Anyhow I sent you a PM on it but I don’t think you got it. Another Freeper sent me a PM saying there was no reply button. I thought it might be a browser issue but Firefox and IE are the same.

I posted this vanity asking if others were having problems. It’s safe to say we are having issues.

Thanks! Maybe it’s a DDS or some other Chicom attack. Or maybe the transvestite vandal Demwit is also a computer hacker. ;’)

Thanks fanfan.

The week has been not bad! Today I had a little episode with the computer (Wintel of course) going loony and refusing to let me edit the spreadsheet I’d been in, plus Access wouldn’t let me type in numbers. I think it may have had to do with a downloaded update (auto-updating of course), because I did a shut down, and the installation went ahead prior to the shutting down. When I fired it all back up, it was back to normal.

I just hope I wasn’t cussing too loud, because I *was* cussing, and it wasn’t nice cussing either. That’s a consequence of living alone for years and talking to myself all the time at home. ;’)

And we had two different unrelated annual outside auditing teams working us over, possibly within earshot (depending on how loud I was, because honestly I don’t know). The execs were all on edge from the audits, and we got some bad news out of the deal. Perhaps it’ll all work out okay though, we’ll have to give them time to retreat a little. If they don’t, I guess I really will need a new job (again). ;’)

And I screwed up my lunch, and wound up eating an apple, plus snacking on the stuff I usually have around.

Oh, and I was late for work (a little) this morning.

I also apparently had a cookie problem because I was logged out somehow. When I logged back in it said I had new posts to me but they were all old.

Oh, My! That's not bad! LOL, that's terrible!

Talking to yourself, out loud, is a sign of intelligence, btw.

I think there was some buyer’s remorse (as it were) after they’d decided on me. But of the, hmm, not sure how many, people who work there, I’m second (or perhaps third) most senior, and have been there a mere 7 1/2 years. The number one guy has been there perhaps ten, and the number four is probably one of the managers. All the others in management have been there less than, hmm, two years? Three years? And the rest of the employees, none more than about four. This is probably not that unusual in businesses in Michigan during the Granholm era.
