He came to be known as a stalwart proponent of what is currently being called a liberal or even progressive social agenda. However his change of position on the fundamental human right, the right to life, like others now identified with those labels including Rev. Jesse Jackson, changed entirely. In fact, with Kennedy's change the entire content of the meaning of those political labels seems to have changed. Senator Kennedy began his political career as a strong defender of the rights of children in the womb. For example, in 1971, Senator Kennedy described his then strongly Pro-Life position in these words:
"While the deep concern of a woman bearing an unwanted child merits consideration and sympathy, it is my personal feeling that the legalization of abortion on demand is not in accordance with the value which our civilization places on human life. Wanted or unwanted, I believe that human life, even at its earliest stages, has certain rights which must be recognized -- the right to be born, the right to love, the right to grown old.
"I share the confidence of those who feel that America is working to care for its unwanted as well as wanted children, protecting particularly those who cannot protect themselves. I also share the opinions of those who do not accept abortion as a response to our society's problems -- an inadequate welfare system, unsatisfactory job training programs, and insufficient financial support for all its citizens.
"When history looks back to this era it should recognize this generation as one which cared about human beings enough to halt the practice of war, to provide a decent living for every family and to fulfill its responsibility to its children from the very moment of conception."

That might do more harm than good.
"It is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God"
Cordially,
Those were the good old days when damage could be minimized with the lack of speed of the 60s news media technology, and cash. Put Mary Jo’s death in 2009, and some bystander would have caught the entire thing on his cell phone video recorder, posted it on youtube and blogged by noon the next day, not to mention someone else would have recorded them making out at the party and then leaving together, and another individual would have recorded Ted’s frantic cell phone call to his brother, where we could all hear him crying and begging for help.
He should have died in jail. May God show him more mercy than he showed Mary Jo.
Coincidence?
The man had his shortcomings, but its all water under the bridge now.
“...and some bystander would have caught the entire thing on his cell phone video recorder, posted it on youtube”. I do not think so, XXX rated you know.

Forty-Six YEARS in the Senate. Let me be the first to introduce ‘The Kennedy Term Limits Bill for All CongressCritters.’
I’ll discuss this on the floor of the Seante later today.... ;)
This just in. Ted Kennedy is still dead.
Amen.
I think the fact that Teddy flew his fat Ar@@ down to a private clinic in Florida when he got sick will make it hard use Teddy as a rallying cry.
Good idea, Nothing at all here too.
Teddy was a force and the number one money raiser for Republicans for decades. He was what he was and did not apologize, no misdirection about his beliefs as one sees with Obama. Teddy never deviated from his leftist beliefs throughout his career - he was consistent. I will never forget that insidious speech about Judge Bork - he will answer for those lies. Generally, Teddy was considered inept in his family, the Old Man pushed Joe, Joe pushed Jack, Jack pushed Bob, Bobby pushed Ted and Ted fell on his ass. He was a buffoon, kicked out of Harvard for cheating, to the underwater escapades to the Au Bar incident where he wakes his nephew on Good Friday to go out drinking, and then the horrible rape accusation, and getting drunk on a plane and screaming. He was so far removed from Jack and Bobby it was like having a mentally challenged cousin - but by the sheer force of the family he was made a senator for life. Even the raft trips that Bobby had run for the kids and Teddy took over turned into complete duds. Teddy had fulfilled everyone’s dissappointment in him. He could have been president but it was never to be. He was smart enough to run with what he had and never deviate to be successful, he was smart enough to know that he couldn’t maintain two opposing ideas at the same time, so his remedy was not to have them.
He has to answer his God about abortion, while the priests bless his body.
Flame me all you want but frankly I am appalled. The man has not been dead for a day yet Freepers. None of us were fond of Sen Kennedy but lets show some respect. This is not the decorum I have known for the last 10 years. Stop acting like those on that other site.
My thoughts are with his family at this time. Losing someone you love is never easy and I hope they find the comfort they need.
I pray the dims don’t turn this into another Wellstone memorial.
Socialism hasnt worked in 6,000 years of recorded history because it didnt have me to run it. - Ted KennedyAnd despite all his efforts to the contrary, it never worked in America either. Even with him as the Jackal of the Senate trying his best to implement it. May God have mercy on his soul...but we are better as a nation with him permanenetly out of that position of power and influence.
Now we have Barrack Hussein Obama and his ilk, who will surely try to use the death of this old, corrupt man, to push through the biggest socialization effort in American history - ObamaCare.
