They are asked if they would participate, and then once opted in they periodically issue questionnaire styloe polls.

Several demographic questions are asked each time: age, location, gender, party registration, how you last voted, how you would vote today.

As I said, they worked for years to refine the method. I see no reason why it couldn’t be just as accurate as phone calls.

Many people no longer use land lines. And many people don’t use the internet.

To correct for such things, they need to compare different methods, and learn how to make adjustments.

They all make adjustments, including Rassmussen.

When they all give the same result, it validates the trend.

To take part in an interactive poll you must have previously registered with the pollster, in this case Zogby. Then when a poll is ready to be voted on, an email is sent to the registered individual along with a link to the site where the questions can be answered.

This makes it very difficult to freep.

I was one of the folks Zogby sent polls to in 2002 and I stayed with the service until he simply quit sending me poll links to complete in 2004. IIRC I was dropped just prior to the series on the Bush / Kerry debate cycles. I guess he thought I was too reliably "conservative" to be a reliable pollster for him.
