BOSTON Sen. Edward M. Kennedy's request to allow the governor to appoint an interim replacement until a special election is held if his seat is vacated, ran into initial skepticism from Beacon Hill Republicans today, but few are ruling out a change to accommodate the ailing senator's proposal.
Mr. Kennedy, suffering from terminal brain cancer, has been absent from the Senate for several months and was unable to attend his sister Eunice Kennedy Shriver's funeral last week. The senator made the proposal in a letter to Gov. Deval L. Patrick, House Speaker Robert A. DeLeo and Senate President Therese Murray that was written July 2 and delivered yesterday.
The governor and the legislative leaders gave no indication whether they would support the change in coordinated statements they issued today, but it is unlikely such a request would not be given serious consideration by those Democratic leaders.
U.S. Rep. Richard E. Neal, D-Springfield, said he strongly supports the proposed change in state election laws and urged the governor to back the proposal.
As we continue to have a national conversation on historic issues like health care reform, Ted Kennedy believes that Massachusetts should continue to have two votes in the United States Senate in the event of a vacancy, Mr. Neal said in a statement today.
It was unclear when such a bill might be considered, as the Legislature has not been holding formal sessions this month and it is undetermined, when they may resume formal sessions.
GOP lawmakers however, criticized the proposal, especially in light of a change in the state election laws approved by Democrats in 2004 to block a potential gubernatorial appointment by Republican Gov. Mitt Romney, in the event Sen. John F. Kerry won the 2004 presidential election.

He wants to change the state ruling that he no doubt spear headed a few years back the prevented Romney from doing the same thing the he (teddy) wants to do now.
ROFLMAO!!!!
Are politicians smart? No
Dead or alive, you can bet whatever Socialist monstrosity of a health care plan passed will bare his name.
I guess they have to rewrite the law as follows:
“If Massachusetts has a Republican governor, then a special election must be held within 1 month. Only Democrats are eligible to vote in this election.
If Massachusetts has a Democrat governor, then the governor may appoint a new Senator immediately.”
There, that oughta do it.
This is disgusting.
You’d think he’d be worrying about his soul and facing God and Mary Jo, but no, it’s all about him.
Kennedys snap their fingers and the state of MASS jumps. How sick is that?
They passed the law in 2004. Romney said that he would appoint Howie Carr to the Senate, if Kerry was elected. He could have been joking, but the Masshole legislature changed the law quickly.
Yes, we are a nation of laws.
But this is what happens when the law making power is in the hands of persons of poor character who have contempt for public opinion because they feel unaccountable to and untouchable by the common citizen.
Well said.
Ha Ha Ha Ha He He He The worms are eating away at his brain and he knows it. Listen and you can hear Mary Jo clapping
I think that his illness has progressed to the point that he does not even know what day it - let alone making any decisions.
Someone else behind the scenes is doing this. If not - then I want to see video of him saying so. Until then - I don't believe he's even capable of having such a conversation.
Odd how he cares more for making sure a communist replaces him than he did for the life of Maryjoe Kopecnic. When Jackie O died, they went to Hyanis to tell Rose Kennedy. “Grandma” they said, “Jackie is dead.” She responded “Was Teddy driving?” I am certain he will toast in Hell along with his corrupt and law-breaking father. Nice job Teddy!!
Ted Khannedy: "From hell's heart I stab at thee."
Yeah, I imagine he'll drive off that bridge when he comes to it.
If Kennedy gets his wish; we will recall every Congress critter period. This is simply to get a bill passed.
Couple of mean old farts ain’t we!?
We will then hold specials elections across the country.
I am sure you will see large loud protest rallys in the Bay State, if it appears that the Massachusetts legislature is going to allow _ _ _ Ted via the governor to choose our next senator. Most people I know have had it with the audacity of those in charge to manipulate the rules for their own selfish gain.
I know it appears that the right and the gop has fled MA, but I think there is actually a large seething silent majority here who are tired of the political shenanigans of the libs and dems and will eventually stand up and protest.
Are we a nation of laws? Sure as long as the laws favors the dems. barf. If the legislature moves forward with this legislation I think they will be surprised by the response they get. There is a large seething majority here in Mass who are sick of the legislatures’ shenanigans. Of course as far as I can figure the dead vote here just like I’ve heard they do in Chicago. So why shouldn’t Teddy vote by default in his afterlife? grrrr.
Reality for Mr Kennedy is going to be a horror! I would not want to be in his shoes! you would think he would wise up!
