BOSTON Sen. Edward M. Kennedy's request to allow the governor to appoint an interim replacement until a special election is held if his seat is vacated, ran into initial skepticism from Beacon Hill Republicans today, but few are ruling out a change to accommodate the ailing senator's proposal.
Mr. Kennedy, suffering from terminal brain cancer, has been absent from the Senate for several months and was unable to attend his sister Eunice Kennedy Shriver's funeral last week. The senator made the proposal in a letter to Gov. Deval L. Patrick, House Speaker Robert A. DeLeo and Senate President Therese Murray that was written July 2 and delivered yesterday.
The governor and the legislative leaders gave no indication whether they would support the change in coordinated statements they issued today, but it is unlikely such a request would not be given serious consideration by those Democratic leaders.
U.S. Rep. Richard E. Neal, D-Springfield, said he strongly supports the proposed change in state election laws and urged the governor to back the proposal.
As we continue to have a national conversation on historic issues like health care reform, Ted Kennedy believes that Massachusetts should continue to have two votes in the United States Senate in the event of a vacancy, Mr. Neal said in a statement today.
It was unclear when such a bill might be considered, as the Legislature has not been holding formal sessions this month and it is undetermined, when they may resume formal sessions.
GOP lawmakers however, criticized the proposal, especially in light of a change in the state election laws approved by Democrats in 2004 to block a potential gubernatorial appointment by Republican Gov. Mitt Romney, in the event Sen. John F. Kerry won the 2004 presidential election.

Screw this fat-headed bstrd...I thought I was going to be able to enjoy watching him go through a slow miserable death...the People's Republic Of MassaTwoshits will throw over their own constitution for this killer...
A bigger man would just retire.
Here in Massachusetts, the Democrats practice situational legislation. Never mind the merits of the laws in question!
Well, Kennedy is a bigger man. Just not in the iconic sense.
Does he not have the option of just resigning his seat so it will be a legitimate vacancy?
Most states allow the governor to appoint an interim replacement. Five years ago, Massachusetts did, too. But, when John Kerry ran for President, they changed the law to require a special election because they were worried that Republican Governor Mitt Romney would appoint a Republican. Now the situation is different, so they want to change it back. Are we a nation of laws?
somebody in the kopechne family should step forward and run for the u.s. senate.
What better place for a turd to be flushed than the toilet known as Massachusetts.
“A bigger man would just retire.”
Or a smaller man...or any man...or a woman...there is no human there, so we get to watch him plead his pathetic case...makes me sick...
Response: Yes. But now we are learning that it also depends upon WHO is passing those "laws."
We are DEVO.
I wonder if after he dies Vicky will cremate him and toss his asshes off the bridge in Chappaquidick?
There is a bridge waiting for this a-hole, and I hope he finds it soon.
I, for the first time in my life, hope that the story of an actual Devil and Hell are real. If so, this evil bastard is soon to smell his first whiff of brimstone.
NOT FOR DEMOCRACTS !!!
Here I was hoping he would drown in his own bile...
LOL!
And by Jean Francois Kerry...
I imagine Obamacare would have written him off except for palliative care.
