PHOENIX (AP) - About a dozen people carrying guns, including one with a military-style rifle, milled among protesters outside the convention center where President Barack Obama was giving a speech Mondaythe latest incidents in which protesters have openly displayed firearms near the president. Gun-rights advocates say they're exercising their constitutional right to bear arms and protest, while those who argue for more gun control say it could be a disaster waiting to happen.

Things are accelerating now and I can foresee “the shiola hitting the fan”, as you wrote.
I’m betting that unlike 99% of weapons given to politicians Reagan knew how to use it. I wonder if he ever took it to the range?
Umm..hold up there big boy. I posted the article because I believed it worthy of thoughtful discussion.
Check my profile and you'll see I've been a member here on FR since the original March for Justice back in 1998. Probably longer than you.
I'm also an NRA Handgun Instructor, for what it's worth. Be careful throwing accusations around just because I might be less hot-headed than you.
>I also support gun rights, however, this is just plain stupid. All it does is give the gun grabbing freaks more ammunition.
By pointing out how many NON-ISSUES there are here?
>I cant stand ossama bin obama, but what would you think if a bunch of folks showed up at a Pres. Bush speech sporting sidearms?
LOL - President Bush probably would have used it as a photo-op to get his picture taken w/ 2nd Amendment supporters.
Well, maybe not... but certainly FAR more of a chance of that happening than Barry “The Peacemaker” Obama; Pr Bush respected people, as can be clearly seen by his decision to motorcade into the Katrina relief-mission area of operations rather than disrupt S&R missions by flying in.
>I would hope the Secret Service would watch them closely.
They’re Secret Service... not mall security.
Ha! Reminds me of that line from "Johnny Dangerously":
"It's an 88 magnum . . .it shoots through schools."
Sorry, bub, not here longer than I.
>I find it hard to believe that there is no federal statute that makes it illegal to carry a firearm within X distance of the POTUS. If there isnt, there should be.
That is STUPID! IMO it should not be that special treatment is given to the president than the normal citizen in such cases; for example, why should it be more illegal or even more serious to threaten to kill the president than some other citizen?
You are correct — that will be ignored by the MSM as they continue to attack conservatives.
ALWAYS! But we shall overcome - in the end.
It is completely unacceptable for any responsible firearms owner to conduct themselves in this manner at any presidential appearance...except this president.
Duuuuh! I guess you need a little history lesson. Poeple are stupid, issane and dangerous. If you think the president deserves the same protection as you, you are beyond stupid.
>In other words, show the restraint that demonstrates you have an understanding of the serious business of handling a firearm.
Given the complete non-incidence of guns, excepting the media-hysteria, I should think that these gun owners HAVE shown restraint.
>I cannot imagine any of the ex-military and ex-LEO guys I train with to open-carry just for the hell of it.
A right unused is a right soon vanished. If one does not exercise the rights one has when they are unquestionable[ly there], then how will those rights fare when “nobody’s done this before”?
What about all the other rights that are disappearing? Like Habeus Corpus. The right to not be held to answer for “capital or infamous crimes” w/o a grand jury involvement? (AIG bonuses) The right to petition the government for redress? (GM Bondholders) The right to a jury trial in [civil] matters over $20? The right to a jury trial for criminal cases? (AIG Bonuses, bank bail-outs) The right of the law to be applied evenly and justly? (John Murtha’s court-granted immunities to slander charges from the Haditha marines, the lack of a Treason trial for John Murtha)
And you want people to leave their guns a home?
I’ll say this, I felt safer in Iraq than I do here; and it’s because I knew who my enemies were... here it seems more and more like my own government is becoming an enemy to the Constitution I swore to uphold.

yikes! she has G.I. Joe shoulder joints!
Uh yeah, it's not like the Federal government has aided and abetted a violent illegal invasion of millions while forcing Americans to pay for it...It's not like the corrupt government has and is attempting to control banks, and major private industry, or has all but destroyed our economy.
We should not offend or inflame the situation. I'll take a nice soft drink while we politely discuss these issues. After snack time, if you raise your hand, I'm sure someone will pick you for a question.
Luke 22:36
It’ll keep thugs away, Until the thugs get the guts to bring their own..
>Duuuuh! I guess you need a little history lesson. Poeple are stupid, issane and dangerous. If you think the president deserves the same protection as you, you are beyond stupid.
I didn’t say that; besides he DOES have more protection than I... the Secret Service!
I said that he should enjoy the same legal rights as the rest of us and not be held up as some sort of legal-god whose mere presence invalidates our pre-existing God-given rights!
But, more to the point, you fail to point out WHY it should be more illegal for someone to threaten the life of the president than the life of some other citizen.
You forgot about nap-time while Nanny[-State] reads us a story! [/sarc][/cynic]
