I’m not sure the man who popped off and tweeted that Sonia Sotomayor was a “Latina woman racist” is the best Henry Higgins for the Eliza Doolittle of Alaska.
But Newt Gingrich was a professor. And he does know something about pulling yourself up by dragging down others and imploding when you take center stage — both Palin specialties.
Besides, he agrees with Sarah — who fretted that her parents and son Trig might be in danger from Obama “death panels” — that we should be very wary about trusting government with end-of-life decisions.
So Newt took it upon himself to become Palin’s Pygmalion. He told Politico that the out-of-work pol should write a book; take a commentator gig on TV; get a condo in D.C. or New York to use as an East Coast base; and prepare three types of speeches — one “to make money,” another to “project her brand” before universities and interest groups, and a vivid campaign stump speech to use for Republican candidates in 2010.
Most important, he advised, the dizzy Palin has to be “clear in her own head what she wants to do.”

Because it's the start of the slippery slope to euthanasia. To see the progression, study up on what has already happened in the Netherlands, Great Britain, and Oregon. The progression is from "voluntary" to "mandatory".
Not to mention a giant impersonal federal government has no business getting involved in counseling about such issues as these issues do not rise to the federal level, not even as matters of a grossly abused “interstate commerce” clause. Health care itself shouldn’t be a federal issue.
MoDo is still completely offensive and off base about Palin, but even while she twists the facts and hurls more insults at her, the fact of Palin’s success and significance comes through.
Palin is finally free enough to be too influential and formidable for a shrew like Dowd to misrepresent her with any credibility.
Maureen, I hate to break this to you, but you might not be the best person to lecture Sarah Palin for being superficial, intellectually lightweight and fast and loose with the truth.
Actually, there IS one aspect of healthcare that IS a "federal issue", and it directly relates to the "interstate commerce" clause. Namely, that any consumer should be able to "shop" for health insurance from any source, rather than just the ones in his state of residence.

I was regurgitating Palin’s argument, in case you didn’t notice. She said that people would be coerced into end of life planning by their doctors, who would talk the unwilling into it because they could make a fee. I said if Palin thinks doctors are so easily corrupted by the prospect of an extra fee, then we need to rethink the way medical treatment is paid. Now where did Obama say that?

I don’t know about you, but when my wife brings the car to a shop “because it’s making a funny noise” I end up with a much bigger repair bill than when I take care of things. Never have that happen? But then, I guess you believe that car repairmen are a worthless lot, and doctors would never think of material gain. Is that it? I don’t know about you, but I live on the planet earth, and everywhere I’ve been when you give someone a blank check, you end up paying more. Why do you think it is different with medical care?
He always keeps his name in the mix of presidential candidate possibilities. But that's only to keep his name in the public mind so he can garner well-paying TV stints and appearances.....and get lucrative speaker fees at political and corporate functions.
Here and there, he deliberately throws into the public arena some outrageous statements guaranteed to raise eyebrows and hackles. This calls more attention to himself and guarantees more bookings.....especially if he pops off about a fellow Republican.
Always follow the momey trail with Newt. It's enormously hard work keeping in the public eye to make a living after you've been a D.C. big shot.....and he works very hard at it. It's his personal business and income survival now, folks. Keep this in mind when you hear him opine.

Yes, my usual reaction when Obama appears is to fall asleep immediately. Purely defensive. If I actually listen to him, I usually have to make a quick run to the toilet.

No, I’m just trying to make a different point, which is totally ignored. Sure, some of our excessive treatments are a result of real fears doctors have of being sued in a medical malpractice suit, but the fact that they make more money the more treatment they order also comes into play. For instance, many orthopedists in my hometown have their own physical therapy clinics and MRI and CAT scan machines. And outside physical therapy clinics pay a “doctor supervision” fee to the referring doctor for each treatment that his patient receives. A more polite way of saying a “kickback.” We know that people in all walks of life are susceptible to having their behavior changed by giving them extra money. Why do you think doctors are different?
Sarah Palin was making the same point, that doctors would be susceptible to the extra fee for end of life counseling and would thereby recommend it to their patients. Are you disagreeing with her?

Okay, I’ll try to get round to it. In the meantime, could you give me a hint—does Oregon already have mandatory euthanasia?
Late Oregon incident. Woman with cancer. State insurance refused to pay for any treatment, but offered to pay for her "death with dignity" suicide pills. Comes pretty close to mandatory to me.
So what? Sounds like a good business decision to me. They've got to make those huge malpractice insurance premiums anyway, so they increase their bottom line by performing services they'd otherwise farm out.
