General Motors Co. predicted Tuesday that its Chevrolet Volt rechargeable electric car will get 230 miles per gallon of gas in city driving.
If confirmed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which tests for mileage figures posted on new car stickers, the Volt would be the first car to exceed triple-digit gas mileage, a GM official said.
Toyotas Prius, the most efficient car now sold in the U.S., gets 48 miles per gallon.
The Volt is powered by an electric motor and battery pack with a 40-mile range. After that, a small internal combustion engine kicks in to generate electricity for a range of up to of 300 miles. The battery pack can be recharged from a standard home outlet.
The downside is that the Volt is expected to cost nearly $40,000, nearly double the sticker price of some economy hybrids.
The Volt is scheduled to appear in showrooms in late 2010.

A golf cart gets infinity.

The car runs almost 100% off battery!!! By that standard my motor scooter gets infinite miles per gallon, just like my computer and the Amtrak.
To: SeekAndFind
Sorry I forgot where I read it but the VOLT only gets that kind of mileage when it’s recharged six times on a trip. Not very honest.

I call BS on 200+ MPG. I guess if you never drain the battery, then MAYBE (with putting around a level parking lot or neighborhood). But there is NO WAY that sort of mileage is happening in that piece of crap with the gasoline engine running. Period.

230 mpg is a ridiculous claim, since they have to pull electric power form the grid. On that basis, an electric golf cart gets 10 trillion mpg.

Something does not make sense here. Are they saying that you only charge it once and then get 230 miles per gallon? I think that is an impossibility unless GM discovered some very advanced technology from another planet. Or are they saying that you have to charge the car multiple times in order to run 230 miles per gallon? This is what should happen in the real world.
