JAMES TARANTO: It's certifiable: the last word on Obama's place of birth
The Wall Street Journal ^ | July 30, 2009 | JAMES TARANTO

Posted on 07/30/2009 5:06:48 PM PDT by curiosity

Several readers have written over the past few days taking us to task for dismissing so-called birthers as lunatics without bothering to refute their claims. We reluctantly concede their point. The birthers have managed to sow confusion in the minds of some who are not lunatics, and for the latter group’s benefit it is worth clarifying matters.

Well, it goes like this... “same birther story”.... “same arguments”... :-)

It is a weird and peculiar phenomenon here... today you go through all the birther assertions, and counter arguments, and then the day is over...

Tomorrow, the birthers start over again like they never posted anything before that day... LOL...

I have nothing further to add to this statement or my original statement issued in October 2008 over eight months ago.”

This shows that there is no Constitutional issue or question. So, when there is no Constitutional issue at problem here with the Qualifications for office, why would the Supreme Court get involved? Which is why they didn’t get involved.

This is one of these guys who is a college professor egg head type who thinks he is much smarter than the masses.

I think "Curiosity" is probably the BIGGEST FRUITCAKE on this forum.

Taranto's a very good journalist and his article helps clear up a lot. One thing I've heard claimed but that Taranto did not address is that Obama has spent money fighting the release of the original document.

Can anybody confirm or clarify?

You assume, quite wrongly, that I was thinking of Fukimo’s very ambiguous statement; I was not.

I welcome Star Traveler, Curiosity, El Sordo, and all the other anti-Birthers, nationally known or not

I think these guys keep pro-Birthers honest, they force us to sharpen and internalize our arguments and our facts, and they force us to do independent study.

They also generate a terrific amount of passion and energy on the pro-Birther side.

Emotions get heated, some comments are insulting or kooky, but, in general, every time we take these guys on, the pro-Birthers get a little smarter and a little more convincing.

The only problem with that — is that the only thing that is actually *happening* is the posting and arguing and “sharpening up” of posts and answers and so on...

That just doesn’t get anywhere substantial, and that’s been the problem with this issue from the beginning.

The reason why I proposed the state law to require a candidate to show his birth certificate or else he couldn’t be on the ballot (did that starting right after the election) — was that this was something that *will work*... and it still is...

So, my posting has been about the reason *why* the birth certificate has not been shown. There is no legal requirement for it to be shown. When you get right down to that reality — then — you know what the next step is. And that next step is to *get that state law*.

BUT, I’ve had people here on Free Republic post that there is no reason to get a state law like that — and presumably they just want to keep right no posting here and making the same statements, because they think that they don’t need a state law. Well, whatever they’re doing *is not working* — plain and simple...

No it won't. You'll just say the long form he shows is a fake, and you'll double down on the argument that he can't be a natural born citizen because is father wasn't a citizen.

Same probably would, but I would ignore the issue after that. I think Obama is hiding something, and I don't think it is some insignificant issue or a matter of not wanting to lend legitimacy to "birthers". I'm not pushing any contrived "the law is the law!" position either. I readily admit that I want to use what most would view as a technicality to kick this jerk out of office. But if he ever shows the original birth certificate, pursuing this issue any longer would be pointless.

Frankly, if this doesn’t get any real traction within about the next six months I think it becomes a waste of effort and counterproductive to getting Obama out of office. The author argues that we reached that point a while ago. I happen to disagree, at least for now.

It is telling that the author demeans anyone who wants the truth as a lunatic. A few are (or at least behave that way). The majority are not.

The guy has been an awful president and stuff like this nonsense only serves to give the media a brush in which to paint conservatives as fringe kooks, frankly.

Are you for real?

Since when should we care what the "media" thinks of us?

They are already demonstrably in the tank for Obama. Lick spittle pups who are repeatedly kicked by the SRM then return for more are the problem, not the solution.

If your political stones exist only at the pleasure of the MSM, you are lost.

With all respect...that doesn’t make alot of sense. Speaking for myself only...I see the BC as the openning of the floodgates that lead to the transcripts and the nagging questions Dr. Taitz (she is also the attorney who represented Sgt. Cooke) found about Obama hiding the college info because of his use of multiple Social Security numbers.

The BC is not a free standing, on topic issue. It branches into the very core of who Barrack Obama really is.

You said — Just because I don’t believe this crap doesn’t mean I ain’t opposed to near everything Obama is doing. The guy has been an awful president and stuff like this nonsense only serves to give the media a brush in which to paint conservatives as fringe kooks, frankly.

Yeah, and that’s an *extremely valid* opinion in light of what has been happening in the media. The *problem* here is that if you try to make a valid opinion like that — then out comes a squad and then you’re called a troll or an Obot and/or being paid to do that and so on.

It’s like some can’t recognize that this is a *real problem* for the conservatives, in terms of them being perceived by the general public as absolute nut-cases and as conspiracy-tinfoil-types. That’s not a good label for the public to have for conservatives.

So, when those conservatives who don’t think this is a good idea, come along and point some of these things out... then out comes all the opposition without considering what fellow conservatives say is *right* (like you are saying).

There’s a reason why Ann Coulter stays away from this. There is a reason why Sarah Palin stays away from this. There is a reason why our GOP Chairman Steele stays away from this... And there was a reason why McCain and his campaign stayed away from this. And we could go on down the list of many well-known conservatives who are staying away from this..., too... but that’s enough to show it...

Hey... I’ll be nice to you, if you’ll be nice to me... :-)..., no, really...

That means that when I’m posting this stuff that it’s not anything to do with Obama support, it has to do with getting something *done* that I think will *work* in real life... which is my opinion...

So, you’ll get answers back if you are also going to listen to me, too... ya know...

Of course, I don’t expect that means you’ll agree with me or that I will with you, but that doesn’t mean because we don’t agree that one or the other is some Obama supporter and the other is not... (which is the way it always comes down to in hollering and stuff like that.. and getting nowhere with it all...).

Consider this (also posted elsewhere):

I’m under the impression that most “birthers” simply want a release of documents—few if any claim to have absolute knowledge that Obama was born in Kenya or whatever.

This reveals the weakness of the opposing argument—they must attempt to paint “birthers” as a group making a false claim. In this way their argument is highly exaggerated.

The president would gain nothing politically for his trouble. By acknowledging the birthers’ demands, he would lend them a modicum of credibility. By ignoring them, he actually reaps political benefits from their efforts. His critics, even those who are not birthers, end up looking like cranks by association. His supporters use the birthers to paint Obama foes as racist—which is probably unfair even to the birthers, as we argued Tuesday, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t effective.

Completely true. But he was going out of his way to hide all of his documents long before this statement was valid. I don't pretend regarding this issue. I would like to see him either damaged politically or tossed out of office due to what he has spent a lot of money to hide.

I don't think we have reached the point of this being counterproductive. You disagree. That's fine. As long as he's sinking like a rock in the polls we have the latitute. When that changes or it has dragged on too long to have a realistic chance I will not even bother posting on these threads.
