Grassley: GOP, Dems on the Verge of Senate Healthcare Deal

Republican and Democratic senators negotiating financial details of healthcare reform have made great progress and are on the verge of a deal, a key Republican senator said on Wednesday.

"We have made great progress. Every day we make some progress," Sen. Charles Grassley, one of the three Republicans from Senate Finance Committee involved in the talks to overhaul the healthcare system, told NPR radio.

"Will we get it done so we can get a bill to the other members by this weekend because there is a certain time you've got to give people to study it? We're on the edge, and almost there," the Iowa Republican said.

President Barack Obama has pinpointed healthcare as his top legislative priority and has pushed lawmakers to quickly reach a deal to rein in healthcare costs, improve care and cover most of the 46 million uninsured Americans.

Obama had asked the Senate and House to come up with initial draft bills before they leave for the August recess but this deadline looks increasingly unlikely to be met.

Lawmakers "wanted to do it right," said Grassley, noting that lawmakers are trying to revamp one-sixth of the economy.

What do you bet the “key leading Republican” is Senator Lugar, RINO needs to be retired by the voters (Republicans if preferable), by Democrats if necessary..!

What Grassley and the rest of the Rinos don't understand is that because voters are chomping at the bit to vote Republican to counter Obama, any primary Republican challengers who beat incumbants also have an excellent chance of winning in the general.

Grassely and the other Rinos are in a strategically weak electoral position vis-a-vis their primaries.

They just don't see it yet. We have to make them see.

“...And to preserve their independence, we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt. We must make our election between economy and liberty or profusion and servitude. If we run into such debts as that we must be taxed in our meat and in our drink, in our necessaries and our comforts, in our labors and our amusements, for our callings and our creeds, as the people of England are, our People, like them, must come to labor sixteen hours in the twenty-four, and give the earnings of fifteen of these to the government for their debts and daily expenses; and the sixteenth being insufficient to afford us bread, we must live, as they now do, on oatmeal and potatoes; have not time to think, no means of calling the mis-manager’s to account; but be glad to obtain subsistence by hiring ourselves to rivet their chains on the necks of our fellow sufferers...” —Thomas Jefferson, THE MAKING OF AMERICA, p. 395

If Grassley sells out to give us “health care,” your political handicapping means squat.

When will you get it.

This is not about Dems versus Reps or Donkeys versus Elephants.

Its about Americans versus Socialists and Grassley becomes a Socialist when he signs on with Obama.

Then he does not deserve to be re-elected next year.

There can be no loyalty to any Socialist RINO’s. Grassley should be Specterized and driven out of the GOP like Saint Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland.

There are three Republicans co-authoring the Senate version:
Grassley who is up for reelection in 2010, Olympia Snowe who is up for relection in 2012 and Mike Enzi of Wyoming. He’s up for reelection in 2014 (he was just reelected in November).

Remember all the crazy comments Grassley said a few month ago while in committee... if he has trouble controlling what he says in public... I guarantee he’s probably done something in private thats got him in trouble.

We need law enforcement to check on these idiots to make sure they arent being blackmailed.

That's one word to use.

Honestly, I'd rather have the Castros and Mussolini.

What few people are aware of is, even if they pass a smaller watered down version, with all those “acceptable” changes, there is NOTHING to stop them from turning it back into it's original version later after it passes, through a “Committee” action, much like the one GrASSley belongs to. And the American people can do NOTHING to stop them, once this becomes law.

"If it guts the two key elements of the package, maybe enough Dems will oppose it. "

Nope. The "two key elements" are really throwaways that they planned on losing. They'll take the rest of it, and come back for more in a couple of years.

I’m not too sure about that, 80 Democrats signed a pledge to not vote for any bill that doesn’t include public option.

Enzi is on that committee as well and here is what he had to say last night courtesy of Hot Air:

Enzi got angry yesterday when rumors of a deal began swirling around Capitol Hill:

Enzi, a soft-spoken conservative, was furious about headlines Wednesday morning that suggested he was close to reaching a deal with the Democrats.

“I felt my reputation was in danger,” he said.

He issued a statement batting down the stories and insisted any deal he might ultimately sign onto would have to be preserved by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-California, and Reid when it is merged with other more liberal legislation in the Senate and House.

“I’m not interested in lending credibility to disaster,” Enzi said.

>> “Wish the hell they had done that on Cap & Tax! “ Except for 8 traitors, they pretty much did, and the hell the ones who voted for it was a good lesson for this issue. <<

One of the cap n' traitors, Mark Kirk, is running for the U.S. Senate now and going around telling GOP voters that he'd oppose Obamacare. If anyone believes that, I have a bridge to sell them. Charles Grassley is a "moderate" who isn't anywhere near as liberal as Kirk and he's already caved on Obamacare. $50 says Kirk would submit some garbage amendment to the legislation and then become a huge cheerleader for Obamacare, claiming he was against the "original version" but the "new version" is "thoughtful, common-sense bipartisan legislation"

All the more reason to run a real conservative against Mark Kirk. We need to dump Crist in Florida and get real conservatives in these other seats as well. RINOs have proven themselves near worthless.

Kirk has a conservative primary opponent, Dr. Eric Wallace. If you know any Illinois Republicans, please ask them to read his site, www.wallaceforillinois.com.
