Next thing on the agenda--booze in any form.

Why is anyone in America surprised? We've elected a Democrat Congress and a Democrat President. They are doing what they do best--tax.

We all agree the Government has a role in what we put into our bodies. Just ask the DEA.

Like the old joke says...We've already figured out what we are, now we're just haggling over the details.

Some two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese.

I take issue with this for a simple reason: for years now the AMA (or whatever gov't health agency) has been changing the definitions of overweight and obesity, have been lowering the weight values to the point that you have to be a starving Somali in weight to be considered "healthy". People like Tom Cruise, Christian Bale, Heather Graham are technically considered "Obese". They may be many things, but "obese hardly qualifies.

And one other thing... does it bother many others when someone starts their article "I told you so.". It's like being lectured by a freaking grammer-schooler. I seldom read beyond those words.

And we’ve got to stop them in their tracks.

I like the visual I get from this statement.

Food?? Here in NYS, they're coming after bottled water...How low you can go.

They started going after "sugar" drinks in lieu of "low cal" drinks...and that was frowned on...so they switched to bottled water...."0" Calories...Make any sense to you??

"the Urban Institute has a new study out that calls for dramatic taxes on “unhealthy” foods.

That would be everything from pizza to hot dogs. All meats. Fried chicken has a lot of fat and soduim in it as well. This is suggesting a tax (additional tax) on quite a large portion of our food supply.

OK, we need to post times Senators and CongressCritters are having TownHall meetings during the recess.

Paul Ryan was on Bennett this morning saying how critical it is to go to these meetings and make some noise.

Could we get a thread where FReepers can put times down (after we call for the times). I will call mine this morning (FL).

How about some tea parties at these “TownHall” meetings?

why hasn’t anyone suggested putting limits on what you can purchase with food stamp card? won’t pay for cokes or ho-ho’s, trans fat, etc....only fruits, veggies, organic this, organic that, tofu, etc.....there are a lot of fat people on assitance. If you want to deep fry your twinkies you pay for it.

Because when the activists point to the supposed $200 billion in annual health-care costs blamed on people being overweight, they are really just building a case to take away from you the ability to decide – or afford – what’s for dinner.

I think it's more than just taxes that they want. They want to take over the US food industry, just the way they took over the auto industry. I think you're going to see serious attacks on fast food and coffee chains because they're profitable, but if they're demonized and regulated into the ground, they will lose business and become vulnerable to takeover by the government.

I also think Obama is aiming at the US agricultural industry. Bambi probably wants to see collective farms in the Central Valley.

I'm not joking, btw.

I, too, had sensed the "Fat Tax" years back, even on this forum.

The goal of Socialists is to control EVERY aspect of your life, and penalize freedom. They tout deviant sex life styles as "freedom", when, in fact, it is intended (the support of it) to destroy families, morals, and common sense decency. YOU will be controlled by the State, whether you like it/know it or not.

Let’s try out some of the slogans:

Food is a human right.
It is not fair that some eat so much when others don’t have enough to eat.
Food is too expensive.
American food production is inefficient, often producing the “wrong” kind of food at high cost.

Neah. What they do best is spend. Right now, they’re looking around for more ways to support that spending and NOTHING is off the table. Heck, I expect them to try taxing windows or something, next.

Well, they got us for breathing—CO2. Cap’n’trade—total nonsense.

Now they want to get us for eating.

And there is an excellent chance that Pelosi will pull an end run and try to get the disaster known as ObamaCare passed in the House by Friday night.

Pick up the phone today and let your reps know this has gone far enough. They remember who they SERVE or they lose their cushy job next year.

What we really need is a tax on Congressional stupidity. The deficit would disappear overnight.

To further serve the public good, Soylent Corporation opened their first waste disposal plant in 2015. Now, Soylent operates over fifteen thousand such plants worldwide, proving clean, efficient waste disposal at a fraction of the cost of traditional public works. Recently, Soylent Corp. has gone even further, compensating customers for their organic trash and inorganic recyclables. Now, as humanity presses boldly towards a bright future, Soylent Corporation stands at the edge of innovation, both abroad and at home. Soylent; feeding the world, one person at a time.

If the control-freaks really want to reduce obesity and control diabetes at the same time then they should put a 100% tax on ALL carbohydrates as it is the carbs that pack on the pounds and raise blood sugar levels.

Sugar, sure, but potatoes, rice, noodles, cookies, tortillas, bread, ice cream, chips, candy, fruits, basically everything except protein like beef and chicken and most, but not all, vegetables.

It makes perfect sense that the government will try to control our diets and take away more freedoms and liberties.

They already mandate a lot of things "for our own good." Consider your car, 5 mph bumpers, air bags, seat belts, don't talk on the cell phone, don't drive impaired, obey the speed limits etc. All these laws and regulations about what you must/must-not have, use, or do. Or consider you home, maybe it is quake-proof/resistant, or has a basement, extra wiring, smoke detectors, etc.

Not that I'm against safe vehicles and safe driving practices. Nor am I against building codes and home safety/security. But look at the thought process that got us to the point where the government is requiring these choices now. "Too many people are getting injured/killed by xyz... We'll pass laws to protect you." (from yourselves) ...and another little bit of personal liberty gets chipped away.

If we have universal health care, backed by the government (ie. our tax dollars), it is a natural outcome of this thinking that they'll want to control diet, exercise, lifestyle choices. "Too many people are making unhealthy choices, it is a burden on the health care system, costing you money. We'll help. We'll pass laws to protect you, and reduce costs."

This is where liberal thinking and ideals leads us. They alway sound great on the surface, appealing to emotions. Who could be against healthcare? Who could be against airbags? Who wouldn't want their children to be "safer" in a gun-free zone? But when you actually dig deeper, you find that generally, all these wonderful, sound-bite good, feel-good ideals lead to fundamental problems with liberties. The entire process is geared towards taking away freedom, liberty, choices, responsibility and accountability. The time is rapidly approaching when Americans are going to have to make a profound choice and a fundamental shift in what America is. We are very far beyond the principles this Nation was founded on. Very far from what the Founding Fathers fought to create. We are either going to descend into a mediocre socialist nanny-state, or reset back to a Nation built on life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
