Harvard’s not stupid. If they don’t have to step in it directly, why should they?
Well, look at it this way. Maybe the "teachable moment" is for Professor Gates..that it isn't about RACE at all. Rather it's about respecting law officers.

If I were a Cambridge cop I think I’d learn that it takes an awful, awful long time to make my way to Ware Street the next time somone reports an incident there; and that it takes even longer, for some mysterious reason, to get to any thing in or around Haaaaaaaaaaaaavaaaaaaad.
I guess whitey knows not to mess with black race hustlers in Cambridge, MA. You will end up getting a ‘lesson in diversity’. A ‘teachable moment’ that as long as you are connected you can get away with playing the RACE CARD.

The greatest lesson to be learned is for people like Gates to stop making everything a racial issue, drop the paranoia, and act like someone with good sense when dealing with police.

It's just the 911 tape they're releasing. It will be short and probably very vanilla. They need to release the tapes of Crowley's communication with central dispatch. When his mic was open, perhaps he caught some of Gates' rant, the 911 wouldn't have.
This entire news conference totally implied and suggested Crowley was the racist, and now we must heal.
This was so damn disgusting.
We’ve been told for days that Crowley turned his microphone on early in the unilatercation and that Gates’s foul-mouthing was transmitted to headquarters. But perhaps it’s not all very intelligible. But that was the word last week—that Gates is on tape. unless Crowley’s report was very inaccurate, the transmission tapes should help our side. But we’ll see.
