Cambridge police commissioner defends officer in Gates arrest
Boston Globe ^ | July 23, 2009 | By Martin Finucane

The Cambridge police commissioner today defended the actions of the sergeant who arrested prominent black Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. last week at his home, saying he believed the sergeant acted "consistent with his training" and without racial bias.

"I don't believe that Sergeant [James M.] Crowley acted with any racial motivation at all," said Commissioner Robert Haas.

Haas also revealed, in response to reporters' questions at the news conference, that Gates's house had been broken into before the incident. He did not specify exactly when the break-in had taken place.

Asked about Obama's comment, Cambridge police commissioner Robert Haas said that "this department is deeply pained."

"It deeply hurts the pride of this agency," he told a news conference this afternoon at city police headquarters.

"Sergeant Crowley followed proper protocol and procedures in making the arrest," said Haas, describing Crowley as a "stellar member of this department. I rely on his judgment every day."

If you go to the Cambridge police website, there is a “contact us” page. If you scroll down the list, you will find Commissioner Haas’ email — this man needs to be commended for sticking up for Sergeant Crowley in the face of the libelous statements that are being made about him.

in his Massachusetts home is a police academy expert on understanding racial profiling.

BFD. Gates is a CITIZEN. He has RIGHTS, or he is supposed to have them.

You have to rewrite it to make it follow the police version of the events. Wikipedia has the condensed version of the police version:

“The police state that Gates had initially refused to show identification and that the arresting officer, Sergeant James Crowley, had given his name on demand. When Gates was told that Crowley was investigating a possible break in, Gates then stated, “Why, because I’m a black man in America?” When Gates repeated a request for Crowley’s name, Crowley replied that he would only speak to Gates outside. Crowley stated that he desired to go outside at that time as “Gates was yelling very loud [sic] and the acoustics of the kitchen and foyer were making it difficult for me to transmit pertinent information to EEC or other responding units”. Gates then followed Crowley from the house onto the porch, yelling at him. Crowley reported that he then warned Gates that he was becoming disorderly. Crowley reported that he then warned Gates again while at the same time withdrawing handcuffs to arrest Gates.”

That account only proves my point. I see no arrestable offense there.

It’s about the metanarrative.

And the metanarrative is, "white folks' greed runs a world in need".

Just like Corporal Hitler, whose decisive moment was seeing the Eastern Jews in the streets of Vienna, the man calling himself "Barack Obama" decided to become a politician the day he heard those words.

Those words removed the blinders, resolved all his confusion, and set him on the path to his destiny.

I wonder if anyone has thought to try and expose why this particular person asking about this incident from a week ago was called upon by the affirmative action racist-in-chief: "Crowley arrested Gates, a leading expert on African-American history, last Thursday after police were called to a report of a break-in at the Ware Street home."

If the fourth estate turned fifth column enemedia had any intergity, ANY, they would be questioning why this particualr question so obviously a set-up to raise the specious 'profiling' mantra, was emphasized! Which sycophantic media female asked this set-up question and what was the question raised before this last set-up?

Sheesh, time for firing squads for enemdia propagandists. ... And before anyone calls the SS, I mean firing squads with paintball guns and purple paintballs, for the up Obama's butt sycophancy.

Don’t you find it odd the officer asked him to come outside his house (where it is easier to charge him with “disorderly conduct”) because of the kitchen acoustics? And, even by the police report account, this is all AFTER Gates had shown ID proving he lived in the house.

Have you read the police report ? I guaran-damn-tee ya I'd be arrested if I pulled some crap like that.

Actually, yes I have. Could you cite for me the statute that makes yelling at a police officer a crime in Cambridge, Massachusetts. I regularly see leftists yelling at the police on TV and I never see any of them being arrested. Can you explain this to me.

I always thought the more conservative viewpoint was that a man’s home is his castle.

That is certainly the point that I have been trying to make on these threads.

I thought gates never produced ID that had his address on it? I have no problem with the arrest, or that they dropped it later when everything calmed down. I don’t think the officer was in the wrong at all. gates was disorderly.....he was not profiled or anything like that. he should have been polite, cooperative and grateful that the local cops were looking out for his house.

>>Gates is a CITIZEN. He has RIGHTS, or he is supposed to have them.<<

Yep. And I’m trying really hard to see where they were violated here. I’m not seeing it. Many others here, including me, have had similar things happen and there was no problem because we simply cooperated. It is becoming pretty clear here, based on what we have been told at least, that Gates brought this on himself and ramped it up until their hand was forced.

I have nothing to go by here other than what the media has reported. Based on that, one is hard pressed to take Gates’ side on this. Do you have some other source of information on this case?

Me thinks thou doth protest too much.

>>>> If everything the policeman did was so proper, and Gates is so obviously guilty, why were the charges against him dropped? <<<<<

Because it was a trivial misdemeanor charge that is not worth fighting the race baiters like Gates, Sharpton, and Zer0 in the public opinion arena.

The lesson to be learned here is not to call the police when you see potential danger to your neighbors or your neighbors’ property if there is any danger whatsoever that they have a big racial chip on their shoulders. Their house is being robbed? Just look the other way.

“OK, the guy lives here. No “break-in” occurred. He’s upset and yelling at us. Let’s say ‘sorry to have disturbed you” and just leave.”
____________________________________________________________
That’s what I’m thinking,...If he was on his property...what’s the point of police?? Hell, just leave you got no business there.

The man just came from an overseas trip...probably irrated...been in airports...I can see it.Comes home and gets arrested...hummmm?

Hey,...folks don’t throw your God given rights and the US Constitution in the trash over this one thread!

We don’t know what their conversation was about but they approached him and he was at his HOME!

Obama apparently believes the actions of Whitey were Stupid. There was only one racist involved in this incident and it certainly was not the Police Officer.

Obama should appologize for his idiot statement. We are a country of law or did he forget that because he really believes the Police were profiling his friend?

Jeramiah Wright trained him well.

As opposed to President Obama, who has NO LEO training and LOTS of racial bias.

The most disastrous press conference since Reagan’s confused, rambling Iran Contra presser, and perhaps worse. I can only imagine what internal DNC polls must have said this morning to cause Harry Reid to suddenly pull the bill until the Fall. DailyKos is livid, bu they have no idea how much deeper a hole this Obama will dig for himself and the Democratic Party.

Do you have some other source of information on this case?

Gates was ordered out of his house by the police. I have this quaint notion that that is not proper.

(Not only that, but the policeman had already observed him as an older black male, and did not indicate that he observed ANY suspicious activity.)

Tomorrow it could be I. I hope that FReepers would rally to my defense.
