Palin resignation turns national eye on Fairbanks

Governor's annual picnic Sunday expected to draw about 5,000 people

Fairbanks Daily News-Miner

FAIRBANKS - Fairbanks is expecting to be in the national spotlight Sunday when Gov. Sarah Palin formally steps down and Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell swears in to take her place.

The transition will take place during the governor's annual picnic, which is expected to draw about 5,000 people, according to the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner.

The former Republican vice presidential nominee announced her resignation plan July 3 without saying exactly what she would do next. She said she wants to continue to be involved in politics, but didn't mention running for president in 2012.

On Twitter postings Tuesday, Palin said she'll use her farewell speech to share gratefulness for the honor of serving and speak to Alaska's destiny that includes contributions of energy and security to the United States.

Palin spokeswoman Sharon Leighow said Palin also is expected to attend picnics in Mat-Su on Friday evening and in Anchorage on Saturday afternoon.

Leighow said the governor's office has been inundated with inquiries from national media outlets about the Fairbanks event.

"It's definitely exciting to have the inauguration here at the park," Pioneer Park manager Jason Avery said. "We've got additional security, and our crews are just making last-minute preparations."

Melissa Stepovich, who works in Palin's Fairbanks office, said she's getting a lot of interest from legislators and other state dignitaries in attending the transition.

"How fortunate is Fairbanks to have this happen here," she said. "It kind of tells you how the governor and the lieutenant governor feel about Fairbanks. They've chosen it, and especially at 50 years of statehood."

Parnell spokeswoman Michelle Toohey said he plans to stay in Fairbanks on Monday, his first official day as governor and meet with local media and community leaders. His first cabinet meeting is scheduled for Wednesday.

And don't forget that the person he hired as a Sec of State had no experience in anything before being given a US Senator seat (which she promised to stay for one full term then broke), and then running to Office before completing her term.

Sorry, but in case you missed it, the Left ain’t playing by the rules, and as long as we play by the rules, we’re dead. They’re determined to use the next three years to permanently destroy this nation.

More backward thinking. New rules were set by Obama, forget how things were done prior to the last election. Palin, of course had/has way more executive experience than Obama.
I like Cantor, but unfortunately the only way he could even draw a crowd of flies was if he stepped in a pile of dog shit.

Cantor, my former rep., has raised the ire of many Virginia conservatives. Most recently he advocated supporting a second 'stimulus package' if a few tax cuts were thrown in the mix. How fecking noble of him!
Cantor, unlike Sarah Palin, is a politician first, American second.

I see bumper stickers in town
“Palin for President
2012 - 2014 1/2”

I haven't seen any of those bumper stickers in Anchorage. Although Anchorage is more occupied with ordinances 5.10 and 5.20 at the moment.

the problem is ...

any conservative with experience ... (not all but nearly so) are already compromised/corrupted by accepting the process that is, and has been established in Washington .. which is not about the people's will, but increasing their own power and all the associated perks,

... turning contracts to their relatives,IE wife,(as did Dashle and now Pelosi’s) husband, children, friends a etc, with all the benefits there within that are possible. Influence peddling etc.

To me, it is much more important to have an honest, person who values family values, fights for reform, and is a great communicator, not afraid to stand up to anyone, and speak truth. All Presidents are always surrounded by experienced people that are adviser's; and part of the Presidents daily decisions. They have multiple opportunity to meet with people of wisdom on any subject. No one is ever ready for all situations no one knows enough all by their selves.

Palin is an asset and a real person .. not simply a person made up to be a front man such as Obama is now. MO!

The election is 3yrs out. Neither Cantor nor Sarah have announced intentions.

At this time there is no reason to start bashing any possible conservative candidate.

In the mean time both Sarah and eric and others will in their own ways be working to stop Obama.

We should support them all.

How do you reconcile her support for amnesty and cap and trade during the 2008 race?

Either she is a politician first (taking McCain's positions for political expediency)or she is not a conservative.

BTW, I'd much rather have a second stimulus with tax breaks than amnesty and cap and trade.

This will be a full weekend; Golden Days in Fairbanks starts this week. Parade Saturday (10AM to Noon), Duct Tape River Regatta on Sunday (Noon to 1PM usually), and Picnic at Pioneer (formerly AlaskaLand) from Noon to ?

Yes, I plan to attend and will post pictures if I have any worth posting. Expect this will be a really festive occasion (inspite of the 10 or 15 "Palin bashers" that may show up)...

Why would I need to reconcile something that isn't real or true? Have Cantor run, (for 2012 GOP nomination). It will be a pleasure to watch Palin kick his effete arse to the curb, along with his pro-abort, liberal wife.

Obama should not be the standard

Then don't use him that way, I didn't.

You showed that Palin had much more executive experience than Obama, and I built on that.

Then you go on to say that Palin has a relatively blank resume for someone with Presidential aspirations.

LOL, excuse me again, but that applies to Obama not Palin. Scroll up and read our other posts, I don't want to be accused of making Obama "the standard."

In my opinion, the GOP should look to someone like Eric Cantor who has both.

How very GOPish of you.

You're ready for your guy Cantor to vote in a SECOND stimulus package? LOL

Oh and BTW, the positive characteristics you ascribe to Cantor, Palin has in spades.

Actually, they are both quite true. Her amnesty postion was revealed in an interview with Univision on October 23, 2008. McCain and Palin’s support of cap and trade was on McCain's election website. Both are easy to find on the Internet.

I do understand that Palin has reversed course on cap and trade. I hope she reverses course on amnesty.

Palin has executive experience
Business experience
Great knowledge on energy, national security, economy
Basic Real World knowledge.
Draws larger crowds and are energized more than any of the others cando.

Excellent educational accomplishment is not real world
experience. The Left is full of the professional students and degree collectors. Why we have the problems today.
Degree collectors on the right in most cases are also void of real world experieice and knowledge.

If both are so easy to locate then why not post a link or two for us?
I know what her opinion of each issue was and is and that opinion is not what you falsely allege.
Maligning Sarah Palin will not elevate Eric Cantor in any way. If you wish to promote Cantor do so on that man's merits, not by smearing the GOP's le chef sans pair.
