Jupiter Hit by an Astronomical Object

Scientists have found evidence that another object has bombarded Jupiter, exactly 15 years after the first impacts by the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9.

Following up on a tip by an amateur astronomer, Anthony Wesley of Australia, that a new dark "scar" had suddenly appeared on Jupiter, this morning between 3 and 9 a.m. PDT (6 a.m. and noon EDT) scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., using NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility at the summit of Mauna Kea, Hawaii, gathered evidence indicating an impact.

>>New infrared images show the likely impact point was near the south polar region, with a visibly dark "scar" and bright upwelling particles in the upper atmosphere detected in near-infrared wavelengths, and a warming of the upper troposphere with possible extra emission from ammonia gas detected at mid-infrared wavelengths.

"We were extremely lucky to be seeing Jupiter at exactly the right time, the right hour, the right side of Jupiter to witness the event. We couldn't have planned it better," said Glenn Orton, a scientist at JPL.<<

It was hit by Odumbo’s sinking poll numbers, coming down from the heavens.

What are the odds that Jupiter would be struck in the same location 15 years later? Astronomical !

Jupiter is a very big, like our Federal Deficit.

And like Debt, it sucks in everything around it.

At least it is not full of black monoliths.
By the way, those were cgi effects in 2010 Space Odyssey II from 1984

The early cgi effects used in that film ‘2010’- - the cost and time were so high that in the last scenes of the digital animation of Jupiter, it went to black and white(gray scale).
In the movie they explained that the planet “lost its’ chemical stench”.

I believe that will make Jupiter eligible for several billion in stimulus money. I mean there is a shovel ready program if there ever was one...filling in that big hole in Jupiter!!

Did Glenn Orton thank Obama? If Bush had still been President, the impact would have happened on the far side of Jupiter and not been visible on earth.

This website is from Greece, so they should be calling the planet Dias (or Zeus).

I have read that an event like Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 impacting Earth happens every century.

Jupiter sweeps up a lot of debris in the outer solar system,
almost certainly keeping us alive that much longer.
