Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor won her first public pledges of support from Senate Republicans and one prominent GOP opponent, after a smooth performance at her confirmation hearings that has placed her firmly on track to become the high court's first Latina and the first Democratic-named justice in 15 years.
Three centrist Republicans announced they'd support Sotomayor even as the Senate's minority leader, Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, said he'd vote no. The split was a vivid reflection of the divisions in the GOP as the party faces a tricky vote on Sotomayor, wary of alienating its conservative base but equally afraid to anger Hispanic and women voters.

Is the office of Chief Justice under the same restrictions can he or she be demoted?
The Chief Justice cannot be demoted, just impeached. The last Chief Justice, William Rehnquest, had been Associate Justice for 14 years before being promoted to Chief Justice, but still had to go through confirmation hearings. However, the Chief Justice position is more ceremonial than anything else.
Ah, she’s slick as glass and wait until the Republicans need her to vote on some policy that’s important to our nation. A bunch of idiots.
Thank you.
No matter which party is in office, there is no realistic way to reverse these republic killers. At some point, demographics will make reform impossible. This country will be overrun with Hispanics and Latinos who do not have a tradition of democracy nor any intention of becoming “Americanized.”
Socialism will destroy the economy and the society. Personal liberty, freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, freedom of religion, and the freedom to bear arms will be suppressed by a socialist/fascist central government. All media will be controlled by the government, and those that fail to fully support the government will be considered terrorists.
Thomas Jefferson believed that revolution was needed from generation to generation in order to grow the tree of liberty. It's been a long time since we had a full blown revolution, and maybe it's long over due.
Glad to be of help.
I just hope this is Obama’s last chance to appoint a Supreme Court justice.
Sotamayor can win this one seat.
BUT the next two, especially after 2010 Senate elections, better go to honest conservative originalists.
I’ve never been one of those conservatives who like to rail about the Republican Party, but I’m getting closer to being peeved at the party. They’ve got to start fighting for conservative principles.
Congressman Billybob
The Republican Party is absolutely useless.
It also doesn’t help that its numbers suck, as well.
Is anyone else infuriated that a Republican (Bush I) was the first to appoint her to the federal bench?
She refused to answer a yes or no question on the Second Amemdment from Coburn today. And there are “Republicans” who will support this person. We really must be near the end.
Bush I was playing ball with the Democrats. He agreed to Daniel Patrick Moynihan’s urging to appoint Sotomayor in exchange for the latter’s supporting Bush I’s choice for another judgeship.
They all have been in DC too long. Next election (or sooner) out they ALL go. The first 535 names in the Tucson phone book could do a better job!
What she didnt say is most important. This woman is so strongly against the 2nd amendment, it is pathetic and no one pushed it. A strong opening for the Republicans alas no spine there either.
I’m trying to take comfort in the fact that her lack of gravitas means she won’t be effective in persuading others to side with her on important rulings. But it’s cold comfort.
Of course, she is able to anticipate Sen. Al Frankens question about Parry Mason, even before he completes it. Outstanding intellect. An intellect we obviously cant waste. /s
