A Lehighton woman teaching a 12-year-old neighbor how to drive was run over by the car yesterday when her student reversed too fast , Lehighton police said.
Police said Katrina Sanabria, 24, was teaching the unnamed girl how to back out of a parking space in the parking lot of the Gypsy Hill Apartments, 401 Mahoning St., at 3:27 p.m. Tuesday when the accident happened. Sanabria was standing behind the opened driver's side and giving the girl directions, police said.
As the car accelerated in reverse, the girl lost control and the open driver's side door struck Sanabria, knocking her down and under the car, police said. The front wheel of the car went over Sanabria as it continued in reverse, police said.

Poor girl she didn’t have a name. Must be from a lower socio-economic family.

12 is too young to start to learn to drive. There are good reasons we wait till 15-1/2 to start driver training. This has been studied to death and it's been confirmed that on average 15-16 is the ideal age to learn to drive. This of course is an average.

Why was a 12 year old in need of driving lessons to begin with?

“you can get a permit at 12 in pa???”
No. Definately not.
At 16, you have to have your driving permit for 6 months before you can be considered for a license in PA.

How else is she going to get to the liqueur store to buy booze and smokes for her parents?

I know different people have different standards -- and kids growing up on farms tend to drive tractors -- but in most locales, teaching a 12-year-old to drive a car is basically teaching a kid how to break the law. I don't support it.
And I've met parents who teach 12-year-olds how to drive, and who confidently declare that their little darling would never take the car anywhere without permission. Yeah. Riiiiiiiight.

Then is she facing arrest for corrupting a minor by inducement and collusion in a criminal act?
No?

No, the article said there were charges pending because you can't legally teach a 12 year old to drive in PA. When I was a kid, in Texas you could get a hardship license at 14, or motorcycle under around 100cc at the same age.
My parents made me wait until I was sixteen, but many of my cousins that lived in the country got their DLs at 14, and started driving at 12 or 13. Course, most of them had started driving tractors at 10 or 11. Come to think of it, one of my cousins did wreck four cars before he was twenty, so maybe it wasn't a great idea.

According to state law, juveniles have to be 16 years old before they learn to drive.

Funny this post should appear today: My son just passed his drivers exam this morning!!!! I am so proud, and he is not 12!!!

Why was the woman out of the car trying to teach? Why not teach her while in the car. It is much easier.

How stupid is this...First put a 12 year girl behind the wheel, and then stand behind the opened driver door when she is back up with the door open?
