WASHINGTON The Bush administration built an unprecedented surveillance operation to pull in mountains of information far beyond the warrantless wiretapping previously acknowledged, a team of federal inspectors general reported Friday, questioning the legal basis for the effort but shielding almost all details on grounds they're still too secret to reveal.
The report, compiled by five inspectors general, refers to "unprecedented collection activities" by U.S. intelligence agencies under an executive order signed by President George W. Bush after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.
Just what those activities involved remains classified, but the IGs pointedly say that any continued use of the secret programs must be "carefully monitored."

Our Constitution applies to our citizens. You are a liberal troll.
The only freedom I gave up after 9/11 was that I waited a bit longer in the airports.....
And not a single documented instance where a citizen's rights were violated. Not a single claim that some one was harmed by the surveillance. Well done.
--Benjamin Franklin
Nice quote, but who gave up any liberty? Explain....
Amen and God Bless President Bush.
You can't agree with our conservative Founders that all men are endowed by their Creator with inalienable (look it up) rights?
And you're calling me a liberal?
Oh, this is rich; I really have to show this to the wife when she gets home
What the h3ll would one expect......we were attacked by radical thugs.
i’m pretty sure thomas jefferson would have been gung ho about going after terrorists and would have done exactly what Bush did...
They said exactly what they meant, and I'm not the one trying to wriggle out of that here.
Back to your original post... what essential liberty did we lose under Bush?
Seems to me I’ve got all of the same liberty I had before.
Tell me whose rights the Bush administration violated. ONE case. Give me one. You can't.
Foreigners and enemy combatants have no right to claim our freedoms and rights. They are trying to destroy them.
All men means all men. Our Founders said that all men were endowed these rights by the Creator. It would be foolish to say that the Creator only gave those rights to Americans--and that's why they didn't say it.
They said the Creator gave them to all men
They said that it is self-evident that the Creator gave all men those rights; those inalienable rights.
They weren't speaking in parables; they said what they meant, and to wrangle what they clearly said is the liberal way, not the conservative way.
Again. Those rights are only guaranteed to US citizens. We have no influence on another country.
Those rights do not apply to those trying to destroy our country and it's citizens.
Now tell me, whose rights have been violated by the Bush administration. Cite a case.
We're not talking here about other countries violating the inalienable rights given by the Creator to all men. And if you'd read the posted article, you wouldn't be asking me to reveal information that is clearly still being kept hidden.
He cannot because he is a just a lying liberal (I know it is a redundancy).
There has never been any evidence presented that any wiretaps were done that violated the Constitution. Not one. Just because you believe some lunatic tinfoilers doesn’t mean any of us should.
How do you know about hidden information?
