I'm shocked at this. Anybody care to explain? I've always held Pope Benedict in high esteem, so I'm baffled by this.

Did nobody on the planet pay attention to the American Miracle? Do they not understand that the Constitution is the primary source our of freedom, wealth, and prosperity, and that's it main tenet is that central authority, as a necessary evil, must be limited? Do they not "get" that concentrating authority is, inevitably, a bad thing? Do they not understand that properly hamstringing the highest authority is the best way to ensure success and happiness for the people? Doesn't anyone understand these simple truths that have been on display for a few centuries? Magna Carta, anyone? Federalist Papers? "Power corrupts"? History class? Anything?

*crickets*

I found this (directly from his writing) to be the most interesting:

In the face of the unrelenting growth of global interdependence, there is a strongly felt need, even in the midst of a global recession, for a reform of the United Nations Organization, and likewise of economic institutions and international finance, so that the concept of the family of nations can acquire real teeth. One also senses the urgent need to find innovative ways of implementing the principle of the responsibility to protect[146] and of giving poorer nations an effective voice in shared decision-making. This seems necessary in order to arrive at a political, juridical and economic order which can increase and give direction to international cooperation for the development of all peoples in solidarity. To manage the global economy; to revive economies hit by the crisis; to avoid any deterioration of the present crisis and the greater imbalances that would result; to bring about integral and timely disarmament, food security and peace; to guarantee the protection of the environment and to regulate migration: for all this, there is urgent need of a true world political authority, as my predecessor Blessed John XXIII indicated some years ago. Such an authority would need to be regulated by law, to observe consistently the principles of subsidiarity and solidarity, to seek to establish the common good[147], and to make a commitment to securing authentic integral human development inspired by the values of charity in truth. Furthermore, such an authority would need to be universally recognized and to be vested with the effective power to ensure security for all, regard for justice, and respect for rights[148]. Obviously it would have to have the authority to ensure compliance with its decisions from all parties, and also with the coordinated measures adopted in various international forums. Without this, despite the great progress accomplished in various sectors, international law would risk being conditioned by the balance of power among the strongest nations. The integral development of peoples and international cooperation require the establishment of a greater degree of international ordering, marked by subsidiarity, for the management of globalization[149]. They also require the construction of a social order that at last conforms to the moral order, to the interconnection between moral and social spheres, and to the link between politics and the economic and civil spheres, as envisaged by the Charter of the United Nations.

Not an Anglican ping, but did you see this?

The pope said every economic decision had a moral consequence and called for "forms of redistribution" of wealth overseen by governments to help those most affected by crises.

Benedict said "there is an urgent need of a true world political authority" whose task would be "to manage the global economy; to revive economies hit by the crisis; to avoid any deterioration of the present crisis and the greater imbalances that would result."

The Pope should re-read the words of Jesus about what belongs to God and what belongs to Caesar- and get out of the business of advocating for Caesar.

apparently Pope and obama will have lots to cuddle over

Well, your Eminence, I'll consider your statements about religion, my soul, and sin... but you can take this economic advice and dunk it into the Mediterranean.

I hold him in high regards as well, but do not consider him an expert in economic or political affairs.

What did you expect, a supply-side Pope? Nothing in the Church history except comfort with massive centralization of assets.

So much for Papal infallibility.

He needs to read some Friedman or Hayak.

Remember this is Al-Reuters. I have not yet read the encyclical, but I would like to do so before offering comment.

OK, let's start with a monstrously huge tax on the Vatican and how about a popular Papal elections? Maybe Obama or Bill Clinton could win that one. ;-)

He’s wrong...again.

He needs to stick to moral/ethical issues—there is more than enough in that wormy can to deal with without getting into one world economics.

sigh...

he is out of his realm and should just stay out of this.

it is not in his expertise and lessens his credibility on what he does have expertise with....

I’m Roman Catholic and agree on nearly all of the church’s teachings. However he is DEAD wrong on this.

God gave us all FREEWILL to make choices.

Regarding capitalism:
1) some will create wealth that will benefit mankind,
2) some will obtain wealth out of greed
3) some will ENVY and COVET what others have earned

...and God will be the final judge with what one does with their wealth
