Lt. Gov. Response to Palin’s Announcement

(July 3, 2009, Wasilla, Alaska) Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell has released his prepared remarks in response to Governor Palin's announcement.

Thank you, Governor. It is with a heavy heart that I hear these words. I so appreciate what you have done for our state and your sacrificial service. You have been a strong leader for our state, you've inspired a nation, and you've ignited the fire of real hope around the world.

I profoundly respect your decision for I know the depth of character and integrity from which it springs. Rare, indeed, are such selfless acts seen in the public arena.

Governor Palin has recounted well the achievements of the last two and a half years and I want to take a moment to assure Alaskans of the good team in place to move Alaska forward and to speak briefly about what Alaskans can expect.

We've got an extremely talented team of commissioners, and I intend to keep them working hard for our state. I will work with the governor to coordinate with the cabinet and staff on a seamless, stable transition. And, I will work closely with legislators, community leaders, and individual Alaskans to accomplish these ends.

I came into office believing and still strongly believe that the power, rights, and responsibilities of our government belong to the people. Alaskans can expect me to focus on positioning Alaska for economic growth by creating legacy opportunities for our people and future generations.

My top priority is to get a gasline. I will continue the course set by the governor that has produced such forward progress these past two years. I will continue to support and promote responsible resource development and energy development of all kinds for Alaskans.

State government will live within its means and we will provide a stable investment climate for job creation. We remain committed to education, safe homes, and transportation. We proudly and resolutely support our military, veterans, and their families, and we will protect second amendment rights. Perhaps most importantly, we cherish life and liberty.

I thank Governor Palin for holding fast to these principles during her service. Personally, I thank her for the confidence she's placed in me, for her trust, and for her friendship. As Alaska celebrates her 50th year of statehood, I believe history will look back on Sarah Palin as one of Alaska's great gifts to all peoples. You have served honorably, Governor. God bless you.

Aside from the Midnight Sun thing...Alaska may be the only free place left and it may be a good place to move.

oh no, Alaska is a TERRIBLE place to live. Cold, dark and bleak WInters. Very, very high cost of living. No Bon Marche stores - it's just....uncivilized.

No, stay home, tell all of your friends how bad Alaska is to live -tell all of them to stay home.

Did I mention how cold and dark the winters are - and bleak?

Okay, I get the reverse psychology ploy. LOL

I AM a conservative, I can get my teacher’s certificate to teach Home Ec., but I need moose cooking lessons. My husband will be a CMA (certified managerial accountant)in about a year. The dogs won’t like it, though.

Do they have fabric stores there?

Those words were very specifically chosen. Guess who has the target on their back? The hopey-changy flim-flam man child.

If this man holds true to his promises as set forth in this statement Alaska will be a shining star of economic stability while the rest of the country continues to slid into Obama’s national nightmare. Every representative that Mrs. Palin speaks for next year can expect a jump of several point in their polling. I hope she chooses wisely who to lend her influence to.

There are no fabric stores in Alaska. The only thing they have in the igloos is furs - but you have to tan them yourself. That can be quite tricky in the -40 weather with the wind blowing at 40mph, but at least you can’t smell them very much with conditions like that.

‘The Queen is dead, long live the King’. Alaska is lucky to have Lt Gov Parnell ready to go. A solid conservative Republican, Sean served in the Legislature for over a decade when oil prices were as low as $9. As a former Senate Finance Chair, he understands our state, our budget, and our problems. He separately won the Republican Lt Governor primary election in 2006 then joined Governor Palin on the General Election ballot. An attorney by training, he's married with 2 teenage girls. He's generally considered a low key kind of guy and that, in my opinion, is exactly what Alaska needs for awhile.

An excellent speech. Sarah clearly gave him time to prepare it, and he kept her secret, which he must have known about for at least several days, judging from this.

No leaks from their speech writers, either.

Thanks for the laugh.

You all are so lucky to have good people in your government.

The Lt. Gov. sounds like a very class act.

Lucky you.

Yes, this was kept under wraps quite well.

One of the leaders of the Rep Gov’s association knew for a few days too, and kept it under his hat.

That British guy on Fox News was astounded that he knew of Palin's plans for the future and that she was going to make her announcement today that she wouldn't seek another term.

Speaking of him and the rest of the media, they showed their true colors today.

The aforementioned Fox guy was constantly trying to get all his guests to turn this into a big negative for Palin, as was Carl Cameron (who slammed Sarah big time when McCain gave the election to Obama) and Fox News itself made lame excuses for not showing the Press conference live.

Chris Wallace went on and on about how Palin should have prepared better so that all the networks and cable news outfits could get their satellite trucks set up, etc.

That was his excuse for not showing it live, but MSNBC had the feed, and treated it differently.

He made his point qutie well, that Palin isn't presidential material.

Wallace is anti Palin, like Cameron.

MSNBC cut to the feed just as Palin was walking away from the podium, saying "Well, that's how it is with live announcements, sometimes you miss them" or something along those lines.

The must have been watching it because they had on the screen a banner saying that Palin wouldn't seek another term.

They ran that a good 5 minutes before Fox news "broke" the news.

[Just as an aside, whenever anything is really breaking, CNN and MSNBC are always a little ahead of Fox]

I think Fox, because they want to appear conservative, probably discuss in depth how they will decieve the audience so they are sometimes a little late with "breaking" news.

Virtually every guest on Fox painted Palin's announcement as negative except the Gov's Association guy and Huckabee.

Huckabee was positive about what Sarah was doing, perhaps he wants to to grab her skirt tails for a ride to the White House.

The thought was put out there that this was the start of the 2012 race for President.

That cracked me up.

The campaign for 2012 started when Romney dropped out of the 2008 race. The next day he started running for 2012.

Newt has been running for years.

And Huckabee who will not commit, but of course is running.

That's what his show on Fox is all about, his hat is firmly in the ring.

Of course all of the republicans hate Palin because she is the only one of them that has any pizazz and can draw many times the crowds any of them can.

That sleeze snail trail of a man Lannie Davis was on Fox saying Palin did this to avoid answering all the ethics violations she has been accused of.

And went on with the standard lying dem talking points.

He went on and on about how she needs to deal with all of those horrible things she did and is being sued for.

Of course he knew that she has been exonerated of ALL of them as was pointed out to him by the Fox guy.

IMO this was a brilliant one-two punch from Palin.

She has been spending 80% of her time fighting the bogus ethic complaints, and it has cost Alaska 2 million and her 1/2 million in legal fees.

She loves Alaska and knows stepping down will be helpful to the state because of the negative reactions from enemies of conservatism because of her popularity.

She will be able to be more on the national scene and be better able to deal with all that comes her way unencumbered by elective office.

She knows that with so many out to destroy her (dems, leftists, republicans, media, Soros, Rahm, Obama [Michelle and Barry], Romney, Newt et al) that it is best for Alaska if she steps down and lets her very competent Lt. Gov take over the remainder of her term as Gov.

There was some talk about her trying to "hide" this by announcing it in the news "dead" period of Fri night, but I think she has pumped life into that spot!

On a side note, I guess this means that Parnell won’t be running against Don Young next year.

I hope Parnell stacks down Hollis French in the general election. Although a few other Republicans will attempt to primary Parnell.
