Sarah Palin trashed by members of John McCain's campaign team in Vanity Fair

BY Michael Saul DAILY NEWS POLITICAL CORRESPONDENT

Monday, June 29th 2009, 12:01 PM Grillo/AP

Alaska's lipstick-wearing pit-bull is a "Little Shop of Horrors."

That's how one longtime friend and campaign trail companion of John McCain, the vanquished 2008 GOP presidential nominee, described veep nominee Sarah Palin.

In an expansive story in the August edition of Vanity Fair, a slew of senior members of McCain's campaign team told reporter Todd S. Purdum that they suffer a kind of survivor's guilt following the 2008 presidential election.

"They can't quite believe that for two frantic months last fall, caught in a Bermuda Triangle of a campaign, they worked their tails off to try to elect as vice president of the United States someone who, by mid-October, they believed for certain was nowhere near ready for the job, and might never be," Vanity Fair reports.

During the campaign, there were reports of anonymous McCain aides describing Palin, the governor of Alaska, as a "diva" and a "whack job."

The Vanity Fair article recounts how strained Palin's relationship was with the McCain advisers. She maintained "only the barest level of civil discourse" with Tucker Eskew, the operative assigned to be her chief minder, the magazine reports.

She believed Steve Schmidt, McCain's top strategist, had lied to her about conducting polling in Alaska - that was a "belief she conveyed to anyone who would listen," the magazine reported.

Steve Schmidt, Tucker Eskew and Nicole Wallce are the three backstabbing POSs, IMO.

I’m sure all three a**wipes will find employment in a Romney or Huckabee campaign. Bank on it.

There’s been a private family matter and she’s been under viscous assault and attack from the angry left.

An assault is especially bad when it reaches the viscous level.

Ineterestingly, Purdum is also a former NYT WH correspondent(we all know the NYT loves conservatives) and last yr wrote a hit piece on Bill Clinton. I knew the name was familiar. He wrote this huge hit pice that was pretty much the same thing as this. The Clintons were peeved big time as Dick Cheney would say.

Here’s some of what Bill Clinton had to say about the article:

“You know he didn’t use a single name, cite a single source in all those things he said. It’s just slimy. It’s part of the national media’s attempt to nail Hillary for Obama. It’s the most biased press coverage in modern history. It’s another way of helping Obama. They had all these people standing up in his church cheering, calling Hillary a white racist, and he didn’t do anything about it. The first day he said ‘Ah, well.’ Because that’s what they do— he gets other people to slime her. So then they saw the movie they thought this is a great ad for John McCain — maybe I oughta quit the church. It’s all politics. It’s all about the bias of the media for Obama. Don’t think anything about it.”

“But I’m telling ya, all it’s doing is driving her supporters further and further away— because they know exactly what it is— this has been the most rigged coverage in modern history— and the guy ought to be ashamed of himself. But he has no shame.”

I never thought I’d be cheering Bill Clinton on. But he might as well have said the same thing here.

I remember a while back there was an article about how some overtures were being made to try and get Gov Palin to do a fundraiser or some appearance to help Hillary Clinton retire her debt or something like that. Some effort to bring the two sides closer.

It might just be time for something like that. The same pro-Obama media that went after the Clintons has found their new target. If we could team up with Stalin and the commies to win WW2 we can team up with the Clintons to take down Obama.

I guarantee you they still have no love for Obama and absolutely despise the media for what they did. Bill Clinton himself has had nothing but good words for Gov Palin and while I’m sure we all know what his motivations are, I think he was sincere in them. He’s known to hold grudges, to remember. If Obama slips, I owuld not rule out a primary challenge. But the Clintons know that an engaged female vote with the addition of her supporters will take him down. It would have last year but the economy ruined everything. McCain was on his way to winning before the whole Lehman Bros collapse sank the market and he fell apart with his suspension/bailout nonsense.

To have 3 yrs to cultivate and work with a number of their supporters and unite for the greater good will work wonders. There was only a few weeks last time. If even 5% of Clinton voters in some of the big states were to switch and vote for Gov Palin in the primariesa sprt of Operation CHAOS, pt II) she’d win them handily. Anything above 10% and it won;t even be competitive.

Ive noticed some of the pro-Clinton and Hillary sites have been positive towards Gov Palin. They are a potential secret weapon to be utilized. Normally, no Republican would have an opening to a democratic group like that. Certainly a Romney or Pawlenty or whoever won;t have a ntuaral affinity with them like she does.

But this is the same playbook they used with the Clintons. The same magazine, the same reporter, the same type of story. I guarantee you the Clintons and their allies/supporters will notice that. Hopefully behind the scenes thre is something going on to try and do something. I know Greta Van Susteren’s husband is close to both of them and maybe this will only help.

In a way this helps her in the sense that every attack by democrats and the left only endears her more to Republicans and conservatives. The same thing happened with Clinton and the dems. It’s just natural to defend your own when someone comes after them.

Also, a lot of these McCain folks are former Bush folks. They all backed Romney in the primary and are no doubt for him in 2012. Furthermore, they’re no doubt all for Jeb Bush in 2016 once Romney loses in 2012. So they have a vested interest in kneecapping Gov Palin. They know if she wins she wants no part of them and they’re all out on the street. They’ll have no role, no access, no nothing. So this is a preemptive strike in a sense. I say she should embrace it and announce if she runs that no former McCain or Bush people will be on her staff. That it will be all new.

Thye are definitely scared and trying to do everything they can to take her down and clear the way for Willard. She’s the biggest obstacle, followed by Huckabee. They key for her to win is to figure out how to keepp Huckabee from running. Without him in the race she should win comfortably, with him, it’s a ways tougher. Now, the good news is Huckabee can’t stand Romney either.

But this article is staright out of the playbook used against Hillary and Bill and hopefully they and their supporters take notice.

You could certainly be correct... however... Joe the Plumber was on the campaign bus and how he described the dims working for mccain... this could fit their MO to a “T”. Not withstanding... you certainly could be correct... it fits the lies of the dim owned press to a “T” also.

If these guys don’t want to work with Palin, she can certainly make sure they have nothing to do with the 2012 campaign.

Make no mistake... many of these people will indeed have roles in the 2011-12 campaign, working for the worst candidates in the GOP field. If they haven't totally discouraged Palin from running before then, these attacks will become part of the primary season.

I’m not a careful reader but the New York Post article said nothing specific about Sarah’s behavior or how it affected the McCain campaign.

When are they going to admit it? McCain ran a horrible campaign, if it was not for Sarah he would have been really trounced!

McCain was an embarrassment, staggering around on the debate stages, when he was not attacking his own supporters at various rallies.

Probably the biggest blunder in US political history, was the McCain camp not using Rev Wright etc, against Obama! You only dream about having that kind of stuff on your opponent! Sarah wanted to go full tilt with Rev Wright! These Sarah bashers need to look in the mirror to find someone to blame.

However, I find it concerning that I didn’t hear of one McCain staffer who has defended Sarah Palin.

There was at least one---Randy Scheunemann

Palin Aide Fires Back at Reported McCain Camp Slams

Internal Battles Divided McCain and Palin Camps

Sources: McCain aide fired for 'trashing' staff

McCain aide disputes sources, denies firing

It's funny that nobody's asking him what was really going on behind the scenes.

It could be.

We’ll know better when Wallace, eskw et al come out later today and denounce it while praising Gov. Palin.

I’m not holding my breath though.

Okay, there’s one rather large problem with the “wacko idiot diva” stuff these guys still want to sell. And that is...it’s not true. If it were true, do you really think the press would have spent six to eight weeks following her and still not known it until the Unknown Comics told them? No, they would not have. Are you kidding me? It’s exactly the kind of story they were looking for. It’s exactly the type of story they were lusting for. And it”s exactly the type of story they would have beaten into a bloody grease spot on the road. If she really were the Wacko Idiot Diva, they would have had the story within days of the announcement, not a month or two later. And they wouldn’t have needed the Unknown Comics at all. No, it was a lie then, and it’s a lie now. And to anyone who wasn’t in a coma or in the wilderness last fall, a particularly stupid lie. Memo to McCain’s Unknown Comics: Stop lying. And stop being stupid. And stop thinking we are.

Oh, yeah...and if you’re not going to stop telling stupid lies, at least stop doing it anonymously, so at least we know exactly who the lying idiots are.

This time Sarah will be the head of the ticket so all you “McCain advisers” won't have to worry about her. That's about the only positive thing you did was to put her in the spotlight. I'm betting she'll win the nomination and the election unlike your guy.
