S.C. GOP Leader Says Straying Gov Should Resign
MSNBC ^ | 5/25/09

Sanford was with his family Thursday as legal and ethical questions swirled

A top South Carolina Republican leader said philandering Gov. Mark Sanford should resign and practice the philosophy he's preached of holding GOP leaders accountable.

Glenn McCall is one of the state's two national representatives to the Republican National Committee. He's also a county party chairman and said Thursday that party members want Sanford out.

McCall said Sanford repeatedly has said party leaders should be held accountable for not upholding the GOP's principles. And McCall says the married father of four should be held to the same standard.

Well he ought to. Show at least as much class as Nixon.

Sanford could later run for the Senate. Sins seem to be utterly forgotten there.

Nixon got no “credit” at all for resigning.

It is scary to think about crazy people being in positions of great power.

Maybe he was just looking ahead to a presidential run?

What did this idiot do? He set himself up. He knew full well that he couldn’t just disappear. It is scary to think about crazy people being in positions of great power.

Crazy? Maybe. More like irrational. It was all so irrational...and that's what one does when they are "in love," possibly obsessed...willing to take any and all risk for the sole purpose of rendezvous with his paramour. And therein lies the state of Mark Sanford's mindset.

Governor Bauer?

Didn't Bauer head up the charge to over ride Sanford's veto of the Bail Out money?

The state's top senator questioned whether Sanford broke the law when he disappeared without transferring power to the lieutenant governor.

Rumor has it that the state's top senator (Glenn McConnell) frequents the same places as Lindsey Graham.

Some of the state’s politicians on both side of the aisle don’t want Sanford to resign because that would give the edge to the current Lt Governor in the 2010 election.

I don’t pretend to know the man. Irrational is a word that certainly applies. According to what he said the affair developed over a period of time. Apparently this was not the first time that they had been together. I just don’t understand.

One thing is for sure. He is unqualified for high public office. If he could not arrange a clandestine get together with his lover he doesnn’t have what it takes to handle national security.

It isn't the adultery that is the issue, it is his own irresponsibility in leaving the State and not leaving anyone in charge.

That is dereliction of duty and he needs to resign immediately.

Gee, isn’t it amazing that she only comes into his life just as he starts his rise in politics. No coincidence there, is there. No, of course not...

She didn’t “only come into his life just as he starts his rise in politics.” She came into his life 8 years ago. Why would an Argentine businesswoman be working for the DNC? It is incredible to believe the affair is the result of a DNC conspiracy.

Agree 100%. The man is a moron and a slave of his nether-regions. He’s already a disgrace. Resignation is the only option.

I am from DC. No, it is NOT incredible. The DNC dangles “bait” of all kinds in front of prominent Republicans, and don’t tell me you can’t believe that.

You believe that 8 years ago, the DNC set a trap for Sanford, who at that time was a congressman, because they knew he was some day going to become prominent in the GOP. They recruited an Argentine businesswoman to come to America and begin a friendly relationship with him knowing that she could then seduce Sanford when the time was ripe to end his political career.

Why didn’t they wait until 2011 or 2012 when he was closer to the GOP nomination for president? Why didn’t they have hot chicks seducing McCain or GW Bush or George HW Bush or Bob Dole?

Do you expect the DNC to have some studly guy try to seduce Gov Palin?

Applying Occam’s razor, the simplest explanation is that given by Gov Sanford; ie, a long friendship with the woman turned into a romantic relationship, and that the Democrats had nothing to do with it.

U.S. Senators are not in the line of succession and Lindsey Graham has no plans to enter the race for Governor in 2010. If Sanford resigns, Lt. Governor Andre Bauer will ascend to the office. You seem to be confused.
