Within minutes, six-year-old Rubjit Thindal went from happily chatting in the back seat of the car to collapsing and dying in her father's arms.
"If we had known it was so serious, we would have called 911,'' Kuldip Thindal, Rubjit's distraught mother, said in Punjabi yesterday. "She just had a stomach ache -- she wasn't even crying.''
Rubjit was pronounced dead at hospital barely 24 hours after showing signs of a fever. Later, doctors told her parents she had the H1N1 influenza virus. She is believed to be the youngest person in Canada with the virus to have died.

Flu cases crowd Montreal Children’s ER
Last Updated: Tuesday, November 3, 2009 | 8:49 PM ET
Officials at the Montreal Children’s Hospital say the ER has been inundated with patients showing flu-like symptoms. (CBC)The Montreal Childrens Hospital closed some of its outpatient clinics and its pediatric blood testing centre on Tuesday to cope with the large number of patients with flu-like symptoms, officials said.
We’re still getting [an] inordinately long list of people waiting for care in our emergency room, hospital spokeswoman Lisa Dutton said Tuesday.
On Monday, Dutton said, 345 patients went through the ER, nearly double the wards capacity.
The closures would allow the hospital to redeploy staff to help those working the ER, Dutton said, and allow them to take some time off, not force them to work overtime.
Patients with scheduled appointments in outpatient clinics are being asked not to call the hospital. Instead, staff would contact patients directly to reschedule, Dutton said.
Provincial Health Ministry officials said the decision of hospital administrators to shut down the clinics was not unexpected.
“That is an immediate adaptation to a volume of clientele that is coming in an accelerated number,” said Dr. Yolaine Galarneau who oversees health services and university medicine with the ministry. “It is something we have asked our centres to be able to do quickly.”
Six specialized clinics have been set up across four regions in the province to deal exclusively with patients showing flu-like symptoms in Quebec, Galarneau said, with another 10 to be opened by the end of the week.
Stay home if you can: officials
Not everyone who is sick needs to go to the ER, and many people have asked to be tested for the H1N1 virus, which simply isnt necessary, she said.
“If you get treated for the flu you are sick for 7 days; if you are not treated for the flu, you are sick for a week,” she said. Medication is there to help relieve flu symptoms and it wont change the course of things unless you are an at-risk clientele” or exhibiting serious symptoms, Galarneau said.
Galarneau issued a reminder that nurses are available to answer questions through the provinces Info-Santé hotline by dialing 811.
In order to help speed up the process and allow officials to help as many people as possible, Galarneau asked people calling Info-Santé to take their temperature first and have on hand the H1N1 self-care guide that was distributed to each household.

H1N1: London and Middlesex has a rate of infection running at double the average for Ontario
By JOHN MINER

H1N1 flu is widespread in London and Middlesex and getting worse with the rate of infection running at double the average for Ontario.
The increasing illness, reported yesterday by the Middlesex-London Health Unit, comes as hundreds of residents turn to their family doctor in hopes of getting access to the vaccine.
snip
A spokesperson for the AIM Health Clinic at 140 Oxford St. E. said they have been receiving about 500 calls a day from people asking for a doctor-administered vaccine instead of going to a public health clinic.
The latest report on pandemic flu in London and Middlesex showed that 25 people with lab-confirmed H1N1 infection were admitted to hospital last week. The good news is there have been no deaths in the city and county from the virus and there are no outbreaks in long-term care homes.
But results of tests on individuals here with respiratory illness have indicated 57.9% had H1N1 compared to 31.7% for the rest of the province.
The health unit also reported the proportion of patients arriving at emergency departments with symptoms of fever and respiratory illness is continuing to climb.
Last week, 64% of patients at the children’s emergency department in London had symptoms of respiratory illness.
That’s up from 3% in the summer.
Classrooms also are being hit hard.
Absence reports from schools last week in London and Middlesex showed that 68% of elementary schools had an absenteeism rate of more than 10% with some schools above 25%. Warshawsky said there is H1N1 flu across all of Ontario, but London and Middlesex are higher than the average.
“We started our influenza cases earlier than the rest of the province . . . We are a little bit ahead, so our numbers are higher.”
Some hospitals in the London area have cancelled surgeries in an effort to handle the influx of flu patients and the Middlesex-London Health Unit has cut back on programs and other vaccination clinics in order to staff the H1N1 vaccine clinics.”

CHESAPEAKE, Va - A 27-year-old Chesapeake woman died Saturday as a result of the flu. Angela Mefford left behind a seven-month-old baby boy and an eight-year-old girl.
“The last thing I got to say to her was, ‘I love you and I’ll see you tomorrow,’” a tearful Hank Mefford Sr. told WAVY.com.
Angela Mefford started coughing on Sunday. On Wednesday a doctor diagnosed it as H1N1. “Neither one of us was really too concerned about it cause it was all about the small kids and the older adults.”
But by Friday Angela had developed pneumonia and was admitted to the hospital. “The longer we sat there and watched her the more bluer she got,” Mefford added.
She died Saturday afternoon. The health department did not test for H1N1. Chesapeake’s Health Director can only confirm Angela died from the flu and that she had underlying health risks.
Hank Jr. also got it but seems to be recovering well. Emotionally Hank Sr. says it’s tough. His 8-year-old stepdaughter is taking it hard. He and the baby have moved in with his parents.
Janice Mefford choked back tears as she pointed to her grandson and said, “I gotta be strong for that one.” That one who will only know his mother through photos and the memories his father will share.
“How wonderful she was. What good, loving mother she was.”
The Mefford’s are not only struggling emotionally, but financially as well. They don’t have health insurance or a burial plot.
Altmeyer Funeral Home asks people who want to send donations to:
Altmeyer Funeral Home Southside Chapel
5792 Greenwich Rd.
Virginia Beach 23462.
Be sure to designate the money is to go to the Angela Mefford family.

Meanwhile, flu cases are clogging up emergency departments.
“Things are very busy. We’re seeing many patients with flu-like symptoms a day,” said Dr. Miriam Mann, head of emergency medicine for the Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance.
For the most part, the people going to emergency wards are really sick. People with symptoms lasting longer than five days, who are short of breath, have a rapid heart rate or have underlying illnesses like asthma should be getting help.
“The vast majority are coming in appropriately,” Mann said. “We’ve had some very sick people.”

Tasha Robinson, 26, of Springfield is the county’s first death from the virus.
Health officials said Robinson did not display the classic symptoms associated with the H1N1 flu.
They said she appeared to have bronchitis, and the only symptoms she displayed were a cough, congestion, and headache.
She did not have the high fever typically associated with the swine flu.
Officials said she became ill Saturday, October 24 and died October 27 at her home.

Time limits can vary but there will be a third wave and our goal is to vaccinate as many people as possible to change the height of this third wave that will come, said Dr. Stephen May with the Sullivan County Health Department. Dr. May said that a third wave of the flu pandemic in 1918 affected the most people.”
This is bio terrorism to reduce population and to make a ton of money on the vaccine.
a new death in Washington County, Maryland.... (another teacher)
Queen-Rhoderick is second WCPS teacher to die in five days
Teacher had contracted H1N1 but she died after being treated for several illnesses
By DAVE McMILLION and DAN DEARTH
November 3, 2009
HAGERSTOWN A crisis team will be at Conococheague Elementary and Boonsboro Middle schools today to help students and teachers at each school cope with the death of one of their own.
Niki Queen-Rhoderick, 57, a kindergarten teacher at Conococheague, became the second Washington County Public Schools teacher to die in the past five days when she passed away at Washington County Hospital at about 6 a.m. Tuesday.
Jennifer Cameron, 25, an English teacher at Boonsboro Middle, died in a car accident Friday night.
Queen-Rhoderick last week contracted H1N1, also known as swine flu, but she died after being treated for several illnesses, her husband Phil Rhoderick said Tuesday night.
She was the love of my life. She changed my life, Rhoderick said.
The couple met through match.com and married in June, he said.
During a Washington County Board of Education meeting Tuesday, Schools Superintendent Elizabeth Morgan recognized Queen-Rhoderick and Cameron.
Were mourning for both of them, Morgan said. We sent our condolences to both of their families.
Rhoderick said his wife contracted a sore throat more than a week ago. Last Wednesday, she went to Smithsburg Medical Center for tests, he said. She continued to be ill, had a temperature of about 103 degrees and couldnt keep her medicine down, Rhoderick said.
She became dehydrated, he said, and when he told a nurse about that condition, the nurse suggested Queen-Rhoderick be taken to the hospital.
On Thursday, she was taken to Washington County Hospital, where she underwent blood tests and was placed in intensive care, Rhoderick said. He said his wifes doctor said at the hospital that she had contracted H1N1.
Rhoderick said doctors told him his wifes temperature eventually wiped out the H1N1 in her body, but she developed other complications, including pneumonia.
It was the worst combination, he said.
Conococheague Principal Ryan Hench said he learned Tuesday morning of Queen-Rhodericks death and met shortly thereafter with staff members to break the news.
Its going to be tough for my teachers and students, Hench said. She was very well loved ... My ultimate goal is to respect her family and take care of her kids here.
Hench said Queen-Rhoderick began teaching at Conococheague last year.
Michael Pavlik, who taught kindergarten with Queen-Rhoderick at Conococheague, said she was a very dedicated teacher and had a wealth of experience as an instructor. She taught for more than a decade in public and private schools and also was a great resource with good ideas, Pavlik said.
The kids were just crazy about her, Pavlik said.
Before moving to Conococheague, Queen-Rhoderick taught at Eastern Elementary School and worked in the central office on Commonwealth Avenue in Hagerstown.
She was a wonderful person. She had more faith than anybody I knew, and shell be a huge loss not only to our school but to Washington County in general, said Heidi Harshman of Hagerstown, a first-grade teacher at Conococheague who last year taught kindergarten there.

Robinson, who had no underlying medical conditions, was in the emergency department with what appeared to be bronchitis about two days before she died, said Dr. Richard Marsh, Clark County coroner.
While in the hospital, Robinson was tested for H1N1, said Dr. Stephen Feagins, medical director at Springfield Regional Medical Center.
The test came back negative, he said, (and) she did not have a high fever at that time.
Robinson was given antibiotics for the bronchitis and was sent home.
Her family, who asked not to be interviewed, told Marsh during his investigation that Robinson started feeling worse with a high fever around 3 a.m. Tuesday and was found dead about four hours later.
Both he and Marsh said it appeared the hospital followed proper protocol related to Robinsons symptoms. The hospital is doing an extensive review, Feagins said.
The H1N1, which has caused the death of 292 people nationally since Aug. 30, hits people in their 20s especially hard. In the last two weeks, Springfield Regional Medical Center has had 12 individuals on ventilators the majority of them in their mid-20s, Feagins said.
snip
Health Commissioner Charles Patterson said he did not want people to panic but he urged those who are considered high risk to be vaccinated. Robinson would not have qualified for the vaccine because she was older than 24 and considered healthy.

WEATHER THE SECOND WAVE
We are in the middle of the second wave of the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic. The first wave peaked in May and June. During the next 12 to18 months, we likely will see more waves of H1N1 influenza affect our communities.
The majority of those getting influenza are younger than 50. In Washington state, as of late last week, we have had 29 deaths related to influenza since April.

16 H1N1 Deaths in Michigan since September [I’ve been told 9 since 9/1 as of 10/28/09 by the MDCH Div. of Communicable Diseases, FWIW—I’ve since counted 10 by 10/28. Awaiting next update.]

LANSING, Mich. (WZZM) - The Michigan Department of Community Health reported Monday that they were investigating their first case of a pediatric death from the H1N1 virus.
Late Monday afternoon the MDCH retracted the report stating that the 7 month old child did not die and has since recovered and is now back home.
Since September 1, 2009 there have been 16 deaths ranging in age from 27 to 72. There have been no pediatric deaths in Michigan.
As of last week there have been 59,629 cases of H1N1 and 396 hospitalizations most of which the MDCH says had underlying health conditions.
Right now Michigan has widespread H1N1 cases; the MDCH estimates that 99% of all influenza cases are swine flu.
There are still H1N1 vaccine shortages in the state. As of late Monday afternoon the state had ordered 765,300 of the 999,200 H1N1 vaccine that the Center for Disease Control has allotted the state so far.
To give you an idea of how far behind Michigan is with vaccine availability the MDCH estimates that there are five million on the priority list for the vaccine and less than one million vaccinations have been allotted to the state. That number does increase every day as more vaccine becomes available. At this time it’s not known when the H1N1 vaccine will be available to the general public but rough estimates hope there will be enough for everyone by December.
