Obama: ‘If You Like Your Doctor, You Can Keep Your Doctor’ (Text of speech to AMA)
Wall Street Journal ^ | 06/15/2009 | WSJ, Barack Obama

Posted on 06/15/2009 12:38:37 PM PDT by iowamark

President Barack Obama’s address to the annual meeting of the American Medical Association today didn’t break new ground, but attempted to assure doctors and their patients that his prescription for overhauling the health care system would be good for them. For patients, he made a sweeping pledge that “no matter how we reform health care, we will keep this promise: If you like your doctor, you will be able to keep your doctor. Period. If you like your health care plan, you will be able to keep your health care plan. Period. No one will take it away. No matter what. My view is that health care reform should be guided by a simple principle: fix what’s broken and build on what works.” And according the prepared remarks, he promised doctors “we can build a health care system that allows you to be physicians instead of administrators and accountants.” For a live blog of AMA President Nancy Nielsen and President-Elect J. James Rohack responding to the Obama speech and answering questions, please check out the Heath Blog.

Remarks of President Barack Obama – As Prepared for Delivery American Medical Association Chicago, Illinois June 15, 2009 From the moment I took office as President, the central challenge we have confronted as a nation has been the need to lift ourselves out of the worst recession since World War II.

To your points....

My time off didn't cost the company a thing. I just took all of my time bank in one four-week chunk, rather than in bits and pieces throughout the year.

I arranged for coverage with everyone I work with, and all clients I have dealings with. There was plenty of time to make sure that my "plate was clear".....pregnancies do that, you know. My taking the time off wasn't a surprise to anyone. The fact that I was out over the holidays was also a mitigating factor. Could I have taken the same four weeks in the middle of our busy season. Legally, yes. But I'm professional enough not to ask for something like that.

My co-worker, in general, was glad to help. I did the same for him not too long ago when his wife was terminally ill, and he was traveling with her cross-country to get her chemo treatments. It's called "Doing the right thing".

In theory, I agree with you that the company only should be beholden to its stockholders, however, are happy employees better employees? Do better employees make the company more successful?

Contrast where I am now, with the way I was treated at a former (and I stress, former) employer, who scheduled me to go out of the country the day before my wife was due with our first child...FWIW, I told them "No" and quit at the first opportunity. I'm better off for it, no idea about the company, or the client for which I was consulting.

Of course he is. "WWEE, don't intend this to be a single payer system...we just want COMPETITION in the market-place." Once the 2000 pound gorilla enters the room there will be no competition. Any employer except for high end will say "get .gov insurance." the bargaining rights of the collective will drive provider rates down and the useless gov workers will eat the middle and make the whole thing more expensive.

an ad featuring doctors saying “if this passes, I’m going to work as a greeter at WalMart” will counter this nicely

What if your doctor doesn’t want to participate in the “public-plan” (aka communist health care)?

Believing anything that Obama says is like slapping yourself in the face and then giving yourself an enema.

And then getting in line to have the same done to you by a government employee.

Of course, it is for the common good - so suck it up and sing “Hope & Change” till the pigs fly and the cows come home.

Doesn't ring a bell. Could you hum a few bars? Does it sound like "Home is behind, the rooaad ahead, and there are many paths to tread. Through shadow...to the eedge of niight." That one sounds more familiar lately.

If I like my doctor, why can’t I just pay my doctor? Leave private contractual relationships alone.

Glenn Beck played a segment in the beginning of his show this afternoon concerned Obama and health care.

He had a video tape of Obama saying that he is in favor of one system for all medical care but that he will not be able to do it all at once. He has to bide his time, but it will come.

but it will come.

Of course it will. Once the 2000 pound gorrilla enters the room, what company won't tell their employees to get gov healthcare to save the company money? I would. Meanwhile back at the ranch, less gifted young pupils will persue being doctors, maybee they can become lawyers instead, that would certainly make us better as a country.

Of course everyone will be able to keep their doctor because the government will mandate that all doctors accept the government plan.

bingo...

I’ll be damned if I end up workin for the gubmint.

LOTS of MDs will walk ....why should they put up with earning 1/3 of what they were...

they owe 200-300 K in loans, spent their 20s in school not earning a dime, worked their assess off etc.

in a few yrs...when your sick...be prepared to hear “the nurse will see you now.”

I wrote my congress critters about this today. I encourage everyone else to do this as well. Email is fine, and I understand that print mail is now being given more consideration again (post anthrax).

The far leftists in Congress are telling their supporters that “the public option” will quickly put the private sector out of business. They are OPENLY saying this to their supporters. They are on U TUBE saying so.

This is what will happen when a non-regulated entity with monopoloy pricing and investigative powers, and no reserve requirements or accountability overall, “competes” with private companies.

Obama is telling everyone to reform the private sector, while trying to quietly slip in this “public option”, and hoping no one notices.

Nearly every non-partisan, and even moderate left organizations, such as the AMA, National Chamber, NFIB, and many others are now coming out strongly against the “Public Option” trojan horse.

It's often the nurse practioner that I end up seeing, now, when I'm sick. Of course I have a choice to wait until the doctor is free or see the nurse. Sometimes I don't care.

The worst part of Obamacare is that he is not only going to take away our choices, he's going to unionize all the healthcare workers under the SEIU. If you think that healthcare costs are going to be reduced under Obamacare, think again.
