Florence County sheriff’s deputies have arrested two suspects, including a 16-year-old, they say were involved in a fatal shooting outside a Florence hotel room Monday morning. *snip*

A native of Jackson, Mich., Chaffin landed at Iwo Jima on Feb. 19, 1945, according to a February 2008 report in The Gainesville (Fla.) Sun.

He dropped out of high school in the 10th grade to join the Navy and “even the score” for the death of his two brothers, Elmer and Kenneth, in the war, according to the September newsletter of the Gator Detachment of the Marine Corps League Inc. in Gainesville, Fla. He also sang in the Great Lakes Naval Choir.

“This is a terrible thing,” Clements said. “That guy was a war hero who risked his life to defend the lives of the two people that took his life senselessly.”

It’s not surprising to see violent crime tick up during economic downturns.

Wear your Kevlar, people (less than $200 on eBay and Bulletproofme.com)! Stuff used police ballastic vests inside the door panels of your car...or if you can’t afford that, then used old phone books.

Armor up. Arm up. And get a dog. Crime is coming. Be prepared, even if someone gets the jump on you.

John F'n Kerry and his VVAW comrades poking fun at the heroes of Iwo Jima...

Note John Kerry's name at top right of The New Soldier

John Kerry, from his book, The New Soldier
"We will not quickly join those who march on Veterans' Day waving small [American] flags, calling to memory those thousands who died for the 'greater glory of the United States.'..."

"The John Kerry quote comes in the epilogue to "The New Soldier," the book put out by Vietnam Veterans Against the War [VVAW]. The book's cover features a group of not-particularly sober-looking anti-war protesters (vets, presumably) flying the American flag upside down [while mocking the historic flag raising event at Iwo Jima]":

TRASH! NEEDS TO BE THROWN OUT WITH THE REST OF THE GARBAGE, INTO A TRASH COMPACTOR.

I’m the son-in-law of an Iwo Jima Army (75th JASCO) veteran.

All were great, brave, selfless Americans.

This hero did not deserve to die this way. TIME FOR REVENGE. SET UP OLD SPARKIE AND THROW THE SWITCH - NOW!!

While serving in the Fourth Marine Division, Corpsman First Class Chaffin
participated in four South Pacific campaigns: Roi Namur, Saipan, Tinian,
and Iwo Jima.
On the Pacific Island of Saipan, his duties were anything but mundane. He
delivered three babies, performed a tracheotomy on a fellow Marine in a fox
hole while a Japanese Zero strafed either side, and rescued seven Marines
who were wounded and trapped in a fire zone between friendly and enemy
lines. For his heroic efforts in saving, treating and moving those men to
safety, he was awarded our nation’s third highest medal, the Silver Star.

When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they fall, one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle.
