Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions, the ranking Republican on the Judiciary Committee, is saying for the first time that he thinks the GOP won't push for a filibuster on Sonia Sotomayor's nomination to succeed David Souter on the Supreme Court.
"The nominee has serious problems," Sessions said on CNN Wednesday morning. "But I would think that we would all have a good hearing, take our time and do it right. And then the senators cast their vote up or down based on whether or not they think this is the kind of judge that should be on the court. ... I don't sense a filibuster in the works."
Sessions said it was still possible he could support Sotomayor, who has drawn serious flak from conservative groups.
Frankly, the fight should not be directed at her or her confirmation (because its inevitable unless she really f*cks up), but rather at Obama. All of her comments need to be pasted onto this guy.
Translation: “We don’t want the Press to call us racists and sexists, even though they will no matter what we do. We’re just gonna roll over for Obama and hope he’ll consider our ‘feelings’.”
Sessions’ quote is: “not in the works.” That’s as of today. This is going to be a three-month process.

During the Bush Administration, I specifically recall reading numerous threads and posts on FR and hearing a multitude of conservative radio talk show hosts, including at least two well-known and highly respected legal scholars, contend that the filibuster is unconstitutional when used to block the approval of nominees to the federal judiciary. Indeed, many of us were in favor of the "nuclear option" back then that would allow simple majority to end a filibuster. If intellectual honesty means anything, then those of us who advocated the end of the filibuster and in favor of up and down votes during the Bush administration ought to take the same position with respect to Sonomayor.
That is not to say that we should give her a free pass. During the committee hearings and during debate on the floor, we need to hammer her over her racists comments and belief that judges should make policy. We need to point out the hypocrisy of the left, that an ultra-liberal Hispanic woman and Yale Law School graduate, who grew up in a housing project, is a refreshing addition to the court; but a conservative Black man who was born into poverty on a barrier island in the deep south where English was not the spoken language, who was raised by his grandparents in the slums of Savannah, and yet earned his way into one of the most prestigious liberal arts colleges in the country and then to Yale Law School, is portrayed by the left as stupid, intellectually challenged, an Uncle Tom, and the poster child for evil.
But when all is said and done, Sotomayor, like all of President Bush's nominees, deserves an up and down vote.
Gotta keep in mind here... let’s say the GOPers someway, somehow — small minority as they are — can cobble together a filibuster. What will come in behind her? We aren’t going to see an improvement in 0bama’s selections unless miracles happen in 2010 and the Repubs’ numbers go up in the Senate.
If the Rats can't get her out of the committee what happens then?
It’s not like one would do any good, but at least try. Geez.

If this woman isn’t opposable, who the hell would be?
She could only get 11 of 44 opinion to agree with her on four of her cases reviewed by the SCOTUS. If she can’t do better than a 25% approval rate, she’s unfit to serve on that court.
Take any person, who is only doing 25% of the right things in just about any job, and then propose they are worthy of joining an oversight committed of that job.
Her nomination makes no sense whatsoever.
I will never forget and it’s time we gave it right back.

Is it a fact or fiction that if Ms. S. receives no Republican vote in Committee her nomination dies in Committee? It would not get to the Senate floor. I heard something on this on TV but not sure of the true consequences.
We need a COP...Conservative Old Party..the GOP is dead or has decided on euthanasia.

As far as I know that’s not true.
However, they can place holds to try to delay.
