Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions, the ranking Republican on the Judiciary Committee, is saying for the first time that he thinks the GOP won't push for a filibuster on Sonia Sotomayor's nomination to succeed David Souter on the Supreme Court.
"The nominee has serious problems," Sessions said on CNN Wednesday morning. "But I would think that we would all have a good hearing, take our time and do it right. And then the senators cast their vote up or down based on whether or not they think this is the kind of judge that should be on the court. ... I don't sense a filibuster in the works."
Sessions said it was still possible he could support Sotomayor, who has drawn serious flak from conservative groups.
Now where did I put my spine?
That's nice. Blatantly racist judge but won't filibuster her because it's a her and she's a hispanic. Thanks for fighting the good fight.
Weak.
well, maybe the spine is in the same place as the “pick your battles” place where one weighs winning.
Unless they can get a dem or two on board, a filibuster won’t work and the chances of that may be slim.
I don’t know that a filibuster doomed to be stopped is worth it.
Elections have consequences. And before people get their panties in a wad, remember the threats to block Roberts and Alito from the left and the reactions people had to that noise.
Run a bad candidate in the national election then lose a bunch of seats because the candidates can’t win local races.
Even Ken Starr said with the exception of the fireman case her general judicial record was good. Yes, she is liberal as snot. Yes she is racist. But, think of some of the folks out there that Obama could have chosen. I’m not sure that beyond what we know the Repubs could have brought a strong case against her.
Just want them to use the word “racist” in every sentence they speak to about/her.....watch her squirm.
The over/under for the confirmation is 88 votes.....
The Republicans should use her words against her. Publicize them loadly and tie them to Obama and the Democrats.
Then vote against her.
But don’t filibuster.
Public perception must be constantly crafted.
The GOP should question her aggressively and also call the CN firefighter who's lawsuit was dismissed by Sotomayer and then use him and Sotomayer in select campaign commercials, especially in the suburban districts that have moved to the left in the last four years. Those suburban districts are filled with whites who don't like reverse discrimination.
#5. I agree with you. I do not think the GOP could get the necessary votes to make a filibuster successful.

I’m waiting to see how the mainstream media investigates Sonia Sotomayor compared to its furry over Sarah Palin.
Think about this:
Abrasive, bullying newcomer whom few associates apparently like, in ill health, full of herself.
We might consider that she’s going to have a hard time playing with the big boys, that she may well be very ineffective, that she may be the best we can get out of the 0 White House.
If the Republicans defeat Sotomayor, it will be harder to fight the next pick. Better to let Barry have his way on this one and mount a full defense next time.
This old gal is the diversity candidate. The next one may be a charismatic leftist, whom we REALLY don’t want.
Apparently, Kyl counted votes and told Sessions (or McConnell, who then told Sessions) they don’t have nearly enough to sustain a filibuster.
good idea.
Good thing Winston Churchill wasn’t a “pick your battles” kind of a guy. This is a LIFETIME appointment to the USSC. This is a battle you pick, even if it is hopeless. Ask Harriet Meier about that.
NEVER EVER EVER GIVE UP.
They are spineless but the marxist empty suit knows no one can fight the first hispanic, as this is all they headline. With Obama headlines, Hitler like campaigns of hope and BS and teleprompters rule.
Don’t you just love it when Republicans concede the battle before it even starts?
