Obama Confuses Memorial Day with Veterans Day
Federal Review ^ | Sunday, May 24, 2009

The smartest president in U.S. history seems to have confused Memorial Day with Veterans Day:

President Barack Obama saluted veterans and urged his countrymen to do the same this Memorial Day weekend, saying the nation has not always paid them proper respect.

In his weekly radio and Internet address Saturday, Obama said people can honor veterans by sending a letter or care package to troops overseas, volunteering at health clinics or taking supplies to a homeless veterans center. He said it could also mean something as simple as saying "thank you" to a veteran walking by on the street.

****

"That is what Memorial Day is all about," Obama said. "It is about doing all we can to repay the debt we owe to those men and women who have answered our nation's call by fighting under its flag. It is about recognizing that we, as a people, did not get here by accident or good fortune alone."

Someone might want to explain to the President that it is a little difficult to say "thank you" or send care packages to the deceased.

I think that is the point...these clowns have been so anti American and anti anything good about American History they have little knowledge of the core concepts of America. Therefore, I don't get worked up about his co-opting Memorial Day into trying to enhance his image with the military because I expect nothing more from his excellency.

I am confident in my belief that he cares not one whit more for the Military than those who died in our past and current wars. His rhetoric just follows his actions.

Obama announced that, in deference to our veterans, he’s negotiated a settlement where Bill Ayers has agreed to no longer bomb their headquarters. < /sarc>

His handlers don't know the difference and put improper information on his teleprompter.

He's too stupid to know the difference.

Hard to believe stuff like this could be accidental. If they actually cared, spending two seconds at ask.com would have prevented this error: http://www.ask.com/ans?qsrc=0&o=0&l=dir&q=Why+do+we+celebrate+Memorial+day&search=search

...saying the nation has not always paid them proper respect.

Obama must always create these strawmen so he can say how he is correcting previous injustices and wrongs. I am surprised he didn't mention that this occurred during the past 8 years.

I can’t blame O’bummer too much for this. I get them mixed up too, and you can’t get more hawkish and pro-military than me!

If anyone wants to honor living military on Memorial day, it is OK with me, but the fact that 0bama totally neglected the fallen military on this special day set aside for that purpose is very troubling. I’m not sure why you can’t see that important distinction. And yes, it would bother me if anyone did this, not just 0bama.

Memorial Day Order

I. The 30th day of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land. In this observance no form or ceremony is prescribed, but Posts and comrades will, in their own way, arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit.

We are here to play, Comrades, as our regulations tell us, for the purpose among other things, “of preserving and strengthening those kind and fraternal feelings which have bound together the soldiers sailors and Marines, who united to suppress the late rebellion.” What can aid more to assure this result than by cherishing tenderly the memory of our heroic dead? We should guard their graves with sacred vigilance. All that the consecrated wealth and taste of the nation can add to their adornment and security, is but a fitting tribute to the memory of her slain defenders. Let pleasant paths invite the coming and going of reverent visitors and fond mourners. Let no neglect, no ravages of time, testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten as a people the cost of a free and undivided republic.

If other eyes grow dull and other hands slack, and other hearts cold in the solemn trust, ours shall keep it well as long as the light and warmth of life remain in us.

Let us, then, at the time appointed, gather around their sacred remains, and garland the passionless mounds above them with choicest flowers of springtime; let us raise above them the dear old flag they saved; let us in this solemn presence renew our pledge to aid and assist those whom they have left among us a sacred charge upon the Nation’s gratitude—the soldiers and sailors widow and orphan.

II. It is the purpose of the Commander in Chief to inaugurate this observance with the hope that it will be kept up from year to year, while a survivor of the war remains to honor the memory of his departed comrades. He earnestly desires the public press to call attention to this Order, and lend its friendly aid in bringing it to the notice of comrades in all parts of the country in time for simultaneous compliance therewith.

III. Department commanders will use every effort to make this Order effective.

—General Orders No. 11, Grand Army of the Republic Headquarters[1].

Thanks you all. We must never forget...and we must honor their sacrifice by doing our part.

Please feel free to spread that link around for Memorial Day.

It is perhaps not a major issue. But I know that the liberals would have nailed Bush big time for such a blunder, so that’s why we want to have fun picking on Obama for it. We know the MSM will not mention it, so we’ll pick him apart here.

Thanks for pointing out that inexcusable mistake. I have edited it on my site and will post it in the future with these battles...with the detail on Korewa and Vietnam that they fully and wholly deserve.

America has paid the price of freedom in its own blood, both here on our own shores, and abroad throughout the world. From Concord, to Bunker Hill, to Trenton, to Lake Champlain, to Valley Forge, to Cowpens, to Yorktown...to Tripoli...to Ft. Mieg, to Lake Erie, to Horseshoe Bend, to Chippewa and to New Orleans... to The Alamo, San Jacinto, Buena Vista, Palo Alto, Monterrey and the Halls of Montezuma...to Bull Run (twice), Antietam, Fredericksburg, Shiloh, Vicksburg, The Wilderness, Gettysburg, Atlanta and Appomattox...to Manila Bay, Guantanamo Bay, to Santiago and San Juan Hill...to Chateau Thierry and the Argonne Forest...to Pearl Harbor, North Africa, Sicily, Italy, to Normandy, Luxembourg, to islands and atolls throughout the Pacific, Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, to the Philippines...Seoul, Pusan, Inchon, Chosin, Chipyoongi, Pork Chop Hill and throughout Korea...Ia Drang, Khe Sahn, Dak To, Hue, Kim Son, Hamburger Hill, "Downtown" Hano, An Loc and all across South Vietnam into Cambodia and Laos...to Granada and Panama…to Kuwait…to Fallujah, the Debecka Pass, Nasiriyah, Haditha, Baghdad, Al Anbar, Mosel, Ramadi and throughout the Sunni Triangle...to Mazari Sharif, to Kabul, to Takur Ghar, to Kandahar, to Tora Bora, to Operation Anaconda and throughout Afghanistan to name but a small few. Americans have shed their blood by the millions for freedom, and that freedom stretches from the United States throughout the world.
