Every day, Darren Newsom's three Bitterroot Valley Ammunition facilities crank out 300,000 rounds of ammunition.
It's not nearly enough.
I'm going about 100,000 rounds in the wrong direction every day, Newsom said. We probably have about six months of back orders right now.
Newsom has been in the ammunition manufacturing business for more than 20 years and he's never seen demand this high.
Fearful of the Obama administration's potential to tighten gun control laws, people from all over the country are stocking up on guns and ammunition.
I went through the Clinton years and there was a bit of a scare then, Newsom said. This is like the Clinton years on steroids. On the day of the election, our phones started going nuts. It hasn't stopped since.
As a master distributor for ATK - the world's largest ammunition business - Bitterroot Valley Ammunition supplies other ammunition manufacturers around the country with the components needed to make bullets.
I get a million primers in every other day and most are shipped out the very next day, he said. I have 100 million primers on back order right now. We just can't get enough of them.
At a recent gun show in Salt Lake City, Newsom sold somewhere between 300,000 and 400,000 rounds in the first two hours.
It's just unreal, he said. Somewhere in lots of basements around the country, there are millions of rounds of ammunition being stored.
Local businesses have felt the ammunition shortage.
At Bob Ward's in Hamilton, Mike Matteson said there has been quite a run on ammunition and reloading supplies like bullets and powder since the election.
We are especially low right now with pistol ammunition, Matteson said. There are four or five calibers that we don't even have on our shelves.

It sounded like a money making deal....but more likely both.
Plug and chug?
Cranking the formulas?
“....and that the tipping point is VERY, VERY close.”
I honestly don’t think we will ever have to fire a single shot. This ‘teenage mentality’ administration is imploding as we speak. Obama is the leading man in this comedy of errors. Get the popcorn out ‘cause they’re going down fast.
A real sign....the upper middle class to genuinely rich Jews (think guys like Chuckie Schumer) in Great Neck are hitting the gun shops like mad since January. Watching them look at the toys under the glass you’d think they were school girls looking at spiders.
They are too arrogant to understand the signal, no matter how clear it is. As much as they even notice, they attribute it to a "small group" of right wing nut cases. That small group has bought enough firearms to outfit the largest armies in the world, just in the past 7 months or so. Just the numbers over the year earlier numbers are enough to outfit the Indian and US ground armies. (The Chinese and Indian armies are the worlds largest, we didn't quite buy enough extra to outfit the Chinese, but the total we bought was more than enough, but we do that every year.) A rifle behind every blade of grass is the way Yamamoto is said to have put it. Well, we have a lot more rifles now, but no more grass.
Since grass blades are kinda thin on the ground where I live, I'm scouting for a good cactus for my rifle(s) to be behind. Preferably one growing on a nice big rock. Sort of like the one I saw along the Battle Road between Lexington and Concord, only limestone instead of granite like I think that one is.
When?
It is a beginning. But even ten thousand rounds of substantial defense calibers per person is not enough to lose their fear of the gubmint.
Travis,
You ruined it. I thought I was the only one who figured out that 7.62 x 25 was a great buy.
Now everyone will know!!!
Based on customer conversation at the two stores I frequently hang out at, it is 99% oscumbo.
The only other reasonable factor is economic-collapse protection. This factor is what caused me to stock up in the late 90's (and, again, after 9/11). Gold and 9mm for purchasing power. For everything else, 7.62, .223, .22, .45, and 12ga.
It wasn't until 2007, when it became obvious that the marxists would win the 2008 election that I began adding to that existing stock. Fortunately I reached my strategic goal before the ammo shortage and concurrent price hikes.
I read that a general talking to Stalin about the occupation of America was interrupted by Stalin, who said that, "you don't occupy a country that has 200 million snipers".
You never know when the Gates of Hell will open ... What's your Zombie Plan???
What WalMart are you shopping at that has .22 LR? At the WalMart, south Austin TX, that I visited last Sunday, the ammo shelves looked like it had been attacked by a swarm of lead and brass eating locusts, with termites coming by to cleam up the boxes. The only .22 they had was shorts and a few boxes of magnums. No LR. No handgun ammo, except maybe a box of .44 magnum or somesuch. No .223/5.56. No .308/7.62, No 7.62 of any sort, including 30-06 and .30 Carbine. Shotgun shells they had. No buckshot or slugs though. Just target and upland game loads, no shot larger than #6, that I saw, maybe the turkey hunters cleaned all the larger stuff out?
It was pretty much the same story, although not quite so bad for the shotshells, at the Gander Mountain store in far north Texas, that I went to a month or so ago. I bought a case of Remington shotgun shells, as that is my traditional Christmas gift to my brother's son, who is trapshooter.
They're not completely stupid. They remember the NYC Crown Heights Riots. They know that Democrat officials will not allow police to open fire on rioters just to save some affluent Jews.
Also, when the welfare checks don't come, and those people are looking for a source of cash, kidnapping the children of the wealthy for ransom will be on the table.
Lead pig?
It’s not fear for many of us but preparation.
I just bought a set of Hogue grips in an exotic striped tulipwood for my CZ-52. Totally cool looking now, besides all the other great aspects of the pistol.
You think 13 small town local cops will be able to keep order on 9000 scared, hungry, out-of-fuel, no comms, no electricity, thirsty, out of smokes, no booze "neighbors" for a couple weeks?
They'll be home protecting their own families just like I will be. Mad Max scenario will happen, just like Katrina, when the real collapse happens in a short while. (and there's not thing one anyone can do to stop it)
Protection from Gubmint? Yes, but very unlikely, see: oath-keepers.blogspot.com.
I work with these active duty every day since '71 and will be tomorrow and as long as God graces me to do so.
Home defense:
Which would explain why the rats want to disarm the public - it should be pretty obvious by now that they share the dreams of Stalin. But, they're a little reluctant to carry the whole thing through due to the fact that the taxpayers are still well armed. And growing angry...
