Thousands beaten, raped in Irish reform schools

DUBLIN – A fiercely debated, long-delayed investigation into Ireland's Roman Catholic-run institutions says priests and nuns terrorized thousands of boys and girls in workhouse-style schools for decades — and government inspectors failed to stop the chronic beatings, rapes and humiliation.

Nine years in the making, Wednesday's 2,600-page report sides almost completely with the horrific reports of abuse from former students sent to more than 250 church-run, mostly residential institutions.

It concluded that church officials always shielded their orders' pedophiles from arrest to protect their own reputations and, according to documents uncovered in the Vatican, knew that many pedophiles were serial attackers.

None of this rises to convincing proof of your "terminally corrupt" accusation. It's a scandal and a terrible one. Your attempt to damn the entire Catholic hierarchy however, is well wide of the mark.

The fact that he pinged Alex Murphy (with the reputation he has) to the thread shows what the intent was.

If I were a Catholic, I’d certainly be demanding some accountability and corrections. I can understand why some folks wouldn’t want to completely abandon their church over this, but I would be extremely troubled by the reports.

I remain a bit skeptical about the total truth on much of this. I’m not interested in denying injured parties their day, but I don’t want the media and special anti-faith interests to be able to manipulate this situation to further their own goals either.

I would honestly like to know more about all this. What types of infractions are proven without a doubt. How widespread were they actually. What forms of physical abuse actually took place on a daily or frequent basis.

Look, I’ve seen abuse cases blown out to near demonic proportions, only to find out none of it took place, so I am quite skeptical of these situations.

Anyone remember the McMartins? Oh they were terrible people. The media whacked them daily for years. Then we found that it was all a big hoax.

I’m just not inclined to believe everything I hear these days without a lot more proof and details.

Of course! That’s why there is NEVER any child abuse in Protestant churches.

And I’m not sure where you are getting that it was “legal” to abuse children. Except in your clouded view.

When I worked Psych, we thought that the people were curable. That meant that they would be left in their lives and treated. It was a horrible mistake but it was done. There is an amount of blame for the doctors treating them as well.

The McMartins, their family and business, were destroyed, by a psychologist.

I knew a few others, in the witch-hunt atmosphere of the 1980s, who had their lives damaged by false accusations.

Wouldn’t there be criminal prosecutions for state employees that hid destroyed the evidence collected over the years for such abuses?

No. also, the statute of limitations on these crimes was over decades ago. By the time a child grows up and can do anything about it - it is too late.

I understand your skepticism. If we hadn't all witnessed the CC paying out millions of dollars in *reparations* for past offenses, this might be a little more suspect.

Unfortunately, the CC’s past actions *screw the pooch*, so to speak.

Yes, state employees would have had the book thrown at them, too, when the statute of limitations hadn’t expired. There are plenty of teachers being caught having sex with students every day in public schools as it is. It’s easy to do a search on it, as some get posted here.

For an institution to cover it up when it has the information in hand, as the Catholic church has done, is criminal.

When local administrators first covered it up, when it got out to the next level, the press and the rest of us find out. In the Catholic church, the press never found out because the next level was the diocese, which covered it up. When that became too much to hold back, the Vatican found out, and they sat on it, as proven by the documents brought before the Irish court.

The Catholic church is a cesspool of corrupt leaders leading generally decent people.

Roman Catholic indoctrination prevents that. Lose the church, according to them, means lose your salvation... God doesn't get to make that decision in the Roman scheme!
