THE POPE STANDS UP (and walks out on Palestinian leader Sheikh Taysir al-Tamimi)
NY Post ^ | May 12, 2009

In an action that spoke far louder than words, Pope Benedict yesterday walked out of an interfaith meeting in Jerusalem after the chief Islamic judge of the Palestinian Authority launched into an anti-Israeli diatribe.

The pontiff, on his first day in Jerusalem, did not realize at first that Sheikh Taysir al-Tamimi, speaking in Arabic, was condemning the "crimes of the Jewish state" and accusing Israel of having "slaughtered women, children and senior citizens."

But as soon as he was told the nature of the sheikh's tirade, he stood and left the meeting, which took place at Notre Dame church, before it had concluded.

It's not as if the organizers shouldn't have seen this coming: Back in 2000, Tamimi did the same thing during a visit by the late Pope John Paul II.

A spokesman for the Holy See later condemned the remarks, saying that

I think you actually do the Catholic Church a favor by being so foul.

She does.

Wow, my church where EVERYBODY speaks up (in turn of course) during Sunday School lessons would be really weird for you!
And I don’t mean ‘standing in front of the congregation’ kind of preaching. I mean, let’s say I run into a few couples who I have learned are having infertility problems. I would likely go to them (even if they are strangers, I’m not shy) and give them information that I feel might help them out, such as my RE’s name and number, my story, etc. I find no shame in sharing those things in church or anywhere else. If I did that to several couples, and the priest or whoever got wind of it, do you think they’d say “WTG! You go, girl!” or would I be reprimanded for my ‘sin’? Are you saying they wouldn’t care what I was doing in the church, while professing to be a Catholic?

As far as adultery goes, although I’ve never in all my 40+ years of attending various churches come across that situation, so I can’t speak from experience. But the Holy Bible says that you should reprimand your brother/sister for their sin and if they repent, receive them back into the body of Christ (the church) with open arms. If they don’t repent and continue their sins, the church deacons are supposed to remove them from the church. I’ll have to look up the Bible passage in a bit, gotta feed my twins right now.

??? Then what is the point of having a confession with a priest handing out 'redeeming' punishment (saying 10 Hail Mary's or whatever) if there's no need for the 'middleman' of the Catholic Church? Too many rules for me! I think I'll stick with the 'go straight to Jesus' and avoid the middleman all together, LOL.

I think you are a little bit confused about what we are doing here. When you were posting incorrect assumptions about the Catholic Church, I was happy to correct you and educate you. If you are going to make sarcastic assumptions, I'm not all that interested in helping you. I'm not particularly interested in comparing doctrines, though I'm sure you'll find others on FR who are. The Scriptural basis for the role of priests is well documented. You can either accept it or not. The Catholic position is that Christ only gave his Disciples the power to witness his remission of sin. The priest is there not to absolve sins, but as a witness. The confession is to God, not the priest. And the act of confession is definitely more sincere when it is made in front of another human being. The priest is by no means a "middleman." Glad I could clear that one up for you too.

Try to keep up.

It was his "maybe more, maybe less" addendum in a subsequent post that revealed his quick covering of his hindsight.

"Nobody knows how many died in the Holocaust" is a familiar refrain of Holocaust-deniers. It's a chorus he obviously feels familiar joining.

Have you seen that the title is incorrect...

Perhaps he is not afflicted with your lying eyes.

...because, as all the videos show, His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI stays seated for Tamimi's entire six-minute speech...

Which was in Arabic with no translation...meaning that Benedict did not understand the speech.

...after which he shakes Tamimi's hand, not once, but TWICE?

Again, before he was told the content of the speech. But then he was, and at that point His Holiness walked out on Tamimi, ending the event early.

The event, sponsored by “Catholic organizers” in a “Roman Catholic institution” ended “on schedule,” according to many news sources, Reuters, and our own lying eyes as seen in any video of the event you care to witness.

It was his "maybe more, maybe less" addendum in a subsequent post that revealed his quick covering of his hindsight.

It's not an "addendum in a subsequent post."

"Nobody knows how many died in the Holocaust" is a fact, but for the exception that God knows. Only God knows.

You'll smear anyone or anything in your support of Tamimi's grotesque publicity stunt. What is your powerful attachment to his anti-Israeli cause? Why are you spending weeks on end helping a crude anti-Christian terrorist?

It did not. That's a lie. The event was cut short.

...according to many news sources, Reuters...

At least you're separating al-Reuters from news sources. That's a start.

...and our own lying eyes as seen in any video of the event you care to witness.

No video can show the parts of the event that didn't happen: THEY DIDN'T HAPPEN.

Not being sarcastic, just providing an ‘outsider’s’ viewpoint.

The Holy Bible says that when Jesus was crucified, the veil was torn in half in the Temple, a symbol that mankind no longer had to go through *anyone* else to receive redemption and forgiveness of sins. Everything I’ve ever heard or seen over the years concerning the Catholic Church is that there is a requirement that members go to confession and if they don’t they should feel really, REALLY guilty about it. In my faith, none of that is necessary, period. I ‘walk’ straight up to Jesus in my prayers, hug His neck, and He comforts me. No middleman needed. :*)

"His Holiness walked out on Tamimi"

You speak of facts, yet you keep leaving out the rest of the story, as Paul Harvey used to say. The Pope walked out on Tamimi AND THE REST OF THE CONFERENCE WITHOUT SPECIFICALLY MAKING AN INDICATION THAT HE WAS 'MAKING A STATEMENT' BY LEAVING. IN FACT, MANY NEWS REPORTS SAY THE CONFERENCE ENDED ON SCHEDULE AND THE POPE WENT ON TO A CORNERSTONE LAYING EVENT THAT WAS SCHEDULED FOR AFTER THE CONFERENCE. It is misleading to imply the Pope snubbed Tamimi or anyone else at the conference. Yes, he walked out, he didn't fly or float or anything else. But by tacking on Tamimi's name, you imply he was snubbed by the Pope--and he wasn't. That refutal didn't come until 'later' (as news reports say) when some other cleric put out an official response to Tamimi's speech. Now how anyone could believe that stating facts about the Pope leaving a conference--just leaving, but not snubbing or shunning anyone--can be called 'Pope-bashing' or 'anti-Catholic' is incomprehensible.

And let me save you the trouble of responding, Petronski, since your opinion is written in stone regardless of video and eyewitness evidence and is predictable:

YOU'RE WRONG! NO OTHER VIEWPOINTS TO THIS EVENT ARE TO BE TOLERATED!!

;-)

the thread's NYP article does not say what you so foolishly uttered on this thread; first proclaiming six million Jews didn't die in the Holocaust

Yet another lie from you. I never said that. Call it a "personal attack," call it whatever you like: Only a stupid person continues to repeat the same lie even when faced with undeniable truth.

To repeat my points: Six million people did not die in th Holcaust. Less then six million people did not die in the Holocaust. Even you should be able to figure out that riddle.

I think you are boring, so I will touch on the rest of your post briefly. The rest should have been posted to the appropriate thread anyway.

The Holocaust targeted ethnic Jews who had converted to Christianity. These included Saint Edith Stien and many thousands of others. Why, tell me, where they targeted? Meanwhile, the Nazis did not target the Karaite Jews in Eastern Europe and Russia, because they determined them to be ethnically Turcic. Religiously, they were Jewish, but they were spared the concentration camps.

I never said that the number of non-jews killed in the Holocaust equaled the number of Jews. There are many reasons why the tragedy was greatest for the Jews, begininng with the specific of targeting of Jews (but also of Slavs and Gypsies). That being said, the accepted number runs from 5 to 6 million. So actually, the two numbers ARE comparable. But we'll ignore the fact that you just invented a new argument that we weren't having, and then for some reason took the provably incorrect side anyway.

(And let us keep in mind that the vast majority of Hitler's architects of death were practicing Roman Catholics.)

Another point form you that is either A) stupid of B) an intentional lie. Nazism was an athiestic political movement. It tolerated some religion when it was politically necessary, but it did not encourage it. That being said, Germany was a majority Protestant nation in the 1930s. You do the math Doctor. As far as I am concerned, no "atchitect of death" has ever been any sort of practicing Christian. Never mind the denomination. And this conversation has also gotten a lot weirder. Are you suggesting that Catholic theology might correspond with the ideas of someone like Hitler, Himmler or Goebels? Do you have any proof that they practiced Catholicism, or that they considered themselves to be Catholic? Or are you just lying again, because you have no intelligent points to make?

Is this an anti-Catholic, anti-Pope website, that states:
"Tamimi shook the pope's hand as he left the podium and the meeting broke up as scheduled immediately afterwards."

Or this website, is it 'anti-Catholic' and 'anti-Pope' as well?
"The pope himself left abruptly when the sheik finished..." Not "during" Tamimi's speech, as your statements and the misleading headline imply, but "after" the speech, which is easily proven by viewing EWTN's video of the event and many others. :-)

What the my statements and the headline imply to you is not relevant. Your misunderstanding of them is your own fault.

"The pope himself left abruptly when the sheik finished..."

The event was not yet over at that point, the Pope abruptly walked out on Tamimi as soon as Benedict was told of the content of Tamimi's speech.
