Leah Sears possible candidate for U.S. Supreme Court
Southern Voice ^ | May 08, 2009 | Matt Schafer

Posted on 05/09/2009 2:57:14 PM PDT by Clintonfatigued

Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears is on a short list of candidates to replace U.S. Supreme Court Justice David Souter, according to media reports. Souter reportedly will step down in June.

Sears, who will also step down in June, has served on the state’s highest court since 1992. The first woman and youngest justice in the court’s history, she was also its first African-American female chief justice. Sears has kept her plans for her retirement private, although she has hinted at wanting a larger public role.

Earlier this year Sears was announced as a finalist for Dean of the University Maryland School of Law. She later removed herself from contention, saying she wanted to seek other opportunities.

Sears has been mentioned as a possible choice for President Barack Obama since before he won the election in 2008. She has been reluctant to discuss her future. Georgia Supreme Court spokesperson Jane Hansen said this week Sears was not talking to the media.

“Chief Justice Sears really believes it would be inappropriate to talk about whatever may be going on, so she is not going to comment,” Hansen said.

Sears did speak with Southern Voice during the “For Children’s Sake: Get Married, Stay Married,” conference, which she helped to organize in November. She described herself as a “moderate-progressive type person” in a wide-ranging interview where she talked about her frustration with the media and hinted about her future.

I hope she is the nominee so we can have it over with. It looks like she will be the best we can hope for.

Souter is about as bad as it gets. I’ll gladly take a replacement.

She doesn't have that crazed liberal look, which is nice.

Also, 1992 was back when Zell was a bona fide FOB (Friend of Bill), BEFORE he was appointed to take Paul Coverdell’s Senate seat after Coverdell died, and thus, BEFORE he became disillusioned by what he saw in D.C.

I will say, however, that Zell has always been a straight shooter. And he’s a former Marine.

The SC is turning into a joke

It always has been in recent times anyway. The Republicans have picked all but two justices. That does not say much for the Republicans...does it? lol.

“I also believe in ‘get married, stay married,’ which a lot of right-wing people have co-opted that as their issue,” she said.

Say what? Co-opted? Uh, I think conservatives have ALWAYS had this as part of their foundation. She sounds a bit out of touch.

“For Children’s Sake: Get Married, Stay Married,”

If you put on your "DU hat" (I have one I keep in a heavily guarded, locked, radiation-proof vault), she sounds like a (Right Wing) radical based on this statement. This kind of statement makes DU heads explode, based on the time I've spent over there (glassing them from the top of the ridge).

Our next Supreme Court Justice will be a mutant semi-literate formerly homeless dwarf who speaks with a lisp who also happens to be female with a minority bent to her.

53 and German born to a U.S. Army Col.

Which simply means she was born in Germany while her father was in the military. Tiger Woods' father was a colonel also and look who Woods backed for president, the chosen one. Thus, makes no difference. Blacks in the military voted FOR THE BLACK guy, not for their own futures. They got hung up on the BLACK GUY thing also. I know several still on active duty that says they have talked with many black soldiers who voted for Obama, why, etc., and the main theme is that he was black. No matter his policies, etc, that he would hurt the military, etc., they voted for the black guy. I encountered a black sergeant recently at the physical therapy rehab where I have been going following shoulder surgery. He was that way. 100% military. 100% for Obama no matter how much damage he does. I just shook my head and said, well sergeant, I am glad I am retired. YOU have live with him and what he does to you in the Army now.

The Left’s hypocrisy knows no bounds. Nonetheless, Sears may be the best “moderate progressive” we're likely to get from Obama. I'll take her over Ginsberg any day.

Then stop posting it so publicly. If the Left catches on she’s through.

DC has a way of devolving people. It would be great if she could be influenced by a Thomas. She’s a mom who believes in marriage. She would be the ideal outreach candidate for conservatives. We at least have a foundation with her. (Man/Woman marriage actually, if she’s being honest)

Sorry, I did not mean to imply she was a German. I thought it would be obvious she is a US citizen given her dad’s position.

Often, a GOP appointee will turn liberal with age. Just once, I'd like to see a flaming liberal appointee grow up on the bench and begin to realize the horrifying costs of liberalism and become more conservative. HOPE springs eternal that a CHANGE on the bench would benefit the people rather than the state!

One would think she'd feel the same way. "I was appointed because I am a good and wise judge, not because of my gender, race or leanings. Am I a judge or just a token of liberalism? Is it ME they want on the bench because I'm smart or am I just picking cotton for the White masters who dominate the Democratic party? Fool tool or is this my chance to make a real difference in this world?"

Time will tell...

“Just once, I’d like to see a flaming liberal appointee grow up on the bench and begin to realize the horrifying costs of liberalism and become more conservative.”

It happened once in our lifetimes. Byron White, a JFK appointee, was never a flaming liberal like Earl Warren & William Brennan, but he leaned to the left when appointed, but opposed Roe vs. Wade and ruled with the Constitutionalist wing increasingly starting in the late 1970’s.
