President Barack Obama has accepted the resignation of an official who authorized the presidential aircraft flyover in lower Manhattan last month, CBS 2 has learned.
Louis Caldera, the director of the White House Military Office, handed in his resignation Friday. The news comes as Defense Secretary Robert Gates says the Air Force flyover that sparked a panic was not adequately reviewed and approved by senior service and department officials.
The flyover was arranged as part of a photo opportunity for White House records. The official photo was released along with Caldera's resignation and the official report on the flyover.

good grief......the whole purpose of the flight was the photo op......otherwise where was it going and why? you act like YOU were on that plane for heaven’s sake.....with the release of the passengers the truth can start to come out....or do you think you already know it?

In this case, as other FReepers have pointed out, it probably wasn’t a wing pod shot. If you look at the upper right of the photo, there’s what looks like the reflection of the F-16’s canopy, as if the pilot pulled out a $99 Fuji and simply took a picture.
The photo is taken from the NY side of the river.The Statue’s back faces NJ.
Special Air Mission 28000 or 29000, if I remember correctly, depending on which aircraft is used.
I think Bush used SAM 28000 as the primary plane. I am not sure if 0bama would have switched to SAM 29000 or if it even matters. They use both for Int'l missions.
This one was definitely SAM 28000.

I have a question about the American Flag on the plane. It is backwards, is that normal on AF1? It looks very odd.

Thats normal. Like the flag on the right sleeve of a soldiers uniform, the union (blue field) always faces forward.

If you are selling seats to donors or giving them to donors to fly over NYC it certainly does matter. In fact, it matters a lot to most of us taxpayers that they would cover up a joy ride on a plan designed for the President/VP.
There is NO way this was a training mission either.
