Last week, after Pennsylvania senator Arlen Specter switched his party affiliation from red to blue, Alabama senator Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III seemed all but assured to replace him as leader of the Republican bloc on the Senate judiciary committee.
And thus an uncomfortable light shined once again on a man plainly hidden in the ranks of the Senate for a dozen years now. A man known to be one of the most consistently conservative legislators on Capitol Hill. A man noted for his obstructionist tendencies. A man with a chequered history linked to America's racist past. A man, who has been, arguably, waiting for this moment for the last two decades.
Sessions's first national exposure was, surely, mortifying for the would-be federal judge. It was 1986, and the then-39-year-old US attorney for the Southern District of Alabama was a Reagan nominee to the federal bench. Sessions had good reason to believe he'd be rubber-stamped through to a judgeship some 200 of the Gipper's judges had already been heavily sprinkled throughout the federal judicial system. But Sessions stopped up the works. The young lawyer became only the second man in 50 years to be rejected by the Senate judiciary committee....
The tip of the problem was a 1984 case that came to be known as the "Marion 3" Sessions's prosecution of three civil rights workers over what he perceived as voting fraud....
...All three were quickly acquitted. Sessions's choice to focus on their efforts looked a lot less like good governance and a lot more like voter intimidation....

Sessions is one of only a handful of conservatives left in DC. A very good man and a superb Reaganite.
I see our chronic Palin basher has gone to posting a Guardian left-wing hit piece on Sessions for a bit of variety.
If the liberal smear machine hates him, that makes him Ok in my book.
Racist past??? Robert Byrd immediately came to mind
My thoughts exactly.
If the Guardian is against him that is a good enough endorsement for me.
Actually, I voted for him a few times before now and as long as he continues to be conservative I will continue to vote for him.
Senator Jeff Session is a fine man and one of the few remaining statesmen. May God bless him and his family and continue to grant him wisdom and favor in his service to our country.
i think jeff sessions is great! now that this nitwit doesn’t like him i love him even more!
Robert Byrd, by all means. Jeff Sessions has stood up to the RINO’s and the lib dirt and come out shining, and he will do so this time. This is his hour to tell the truth and to hold Obama totally accountable for his pick, whomever the commie will be.
The hearings should be popcorn worthy.
Agreed, he has a very consistent conservative voting record. He voted against the TARP give away and the "community action" crap that will pass. He (or someone in his office) answers every email I send him. Can't say that about bonner. (spit)
“obstructionist tendencies”
The ability to say “no” is a true test of character, Ms. Wildman.
Judging from your photos, I seriously doubt you ever had the need to say “no”
My favorite Senator ever!
~ hearts ~
(((( Huggs & Smoochies! ))) ---> Jeff Sessions <--- ((((Huggs & Smoochies! ))))
Jeff Sessions is one of the very few in the Senate who truly deserves the appelation “Distinguished.”
My favorite Senator. And I am not form Alabama.
Sen. Sessions is a great man. I have called his office a few times to thank him for his stands, while my two Delaware Rat Senators always voted the opposite.
After a Grand Kleagle like Bob Byrd was absolved by the Rats for his racist past, I don’t care about any of these racist charges by the Rats.
Watch him in action on C-Span sometime. You’ll be calling his office too.
Not just for variety. He’s going to be the Republican spokesman for the upcoming Supreme Court fight. A news reporter on the radio today (likely AP) was making note of various “ironic” facts about his past as well. The battle lines are drawn already even though Obama is practically assured a left winger to replace Souter. This is what the MSM is all about.
I see the ALINSKYite strategy is in full force.....getting ready for the upcoming Supreme Court hearings
Kennedy and Metzenbaum hated him?? ROFLMAO, there’s a seal of approval a Republican can only dream of. I knew this article was Brit crap as soon as I saw the word “chequered.”
Well, that attack sure as heck didn’t take long! Sheesh!
