CA: Out of control windmill prompts highway closures
LA Daily News ^ | 5/3/09

A fast spinning windmill appeared "out of control," and threatened traffic on the highway between Los Angeles County's high desert and the San Joaquin Valley, a CHP dispatcher in Bakersfield said today.

The CHP dispatcher said the windmill is spinning too fast and might fly apart, which is why Highway 58 in the Tehachapi Pass was closed down both directions between Mojave and about 45 miles north of Lancaster and Tehachapi.

The malfunctioning electric generator is one of thousands of windmills installed along both sides of Highway 58 in Tehachapi Pass.

Traffic was being detoured onto parallel county roads. Traffic from the L.A. area was being directed to westbound Rosamond Boulevard to Willow Springs Road, and then that road north to Tehachapi.

At midafternoon, the CHP was calling the windmill's owners to see if it could be shut down.

I thought the blades were fixed pitch and governor controlled but I would think that the blades could be adjusted for wind speed as well ... something to research ...they do have brakes since I’ve seen some turning and some not. Also, they could be directional controlled - pointed into the wind ...

Nothing like a beautiful landscape (as per the Greenies), dotted with inefficient, taxpayer-subsidized, 30% availability wind turbines!

They need to locate these where they'll really do some good. My first thought would be the inside the Beltway D.C.

Every time I read about one of these I’m reminded of the article in the book “The 80’s, a look back at the tumultuous decade 1980 to 1989”, published in 1979. It’s a satirical story about a windmill that goes out of control on Timbalier Island, ripping and slashing its way through homes and racking up a huge death toll, and people are left wondering about the cost of wind energy.

That book is full of such prescient stories.
