Swine flu: pandemic alert level raised to level 5
Times On Line ^ | April 29,2009

Posted on 04/29/2009 1:30:18 PM PDT by COUNTrecount

The World Health Organisation tonight raised the pandemic alert level to five out of six after the continued spread of swine flu world wide.

Margaret Chan, the organisation's director-general, said tonight: "I have decided to raise the current level of influenza pandemic alert from phase 4 to phase 5.

"Influenza pandemics must be taken seriously precisely because of their capacity to spread rapidly to every country in the world."

Making a call to governments, she said: "This change to a higher phase of alert is a signal to governments, to ministries of health and other industries, to the pharmaceutical industry and business industry that certain actions must be undertaken now with increased urgency and at an accelerated pace."

I will gladly move the clock forward by two months and eat humble pie and apologize to you with all due sincerity in order to make this thing NOT become a Pandemic. You want to be right, and I want you to be right! I have no desire to say I told you so, because that would mean thousands, tens of thousands, potentially millions of people may die. I don’t give a rat’s hiney about being RIGHT here. I am concerned about being RIGHT.

The problem is, 2 months from now, if it turns out I was right to be concerned, then we can’t change the clocks BACK so that people will behave differently and not contribute to the spread of this.

I am simply saying that IMO, it is better to be safe than sorry and laugh about it later, than to blow it off and regret it later - for one’s own sake, their family’s sake, and all the other poor saps who may be infected by EACH person who laughs it off.

Also, if you are disinfecting and buying hand sanitizer, then apparently you ARE taking this with due seriousness. So I don’t know why you would post as if you are not. All that does is empower other fence-sitters to NOT take it seriously. If it’s worth it to you to take care with your own life, why would you want to imply to ANYONE that they have no reason to be concerned - unless you just want to make sure you get all the hand sanitizer before they do.

(I have been on a work deadline until today, so today was my first opportunity to go shopping... No masks and no hand sanitizer at my local WalMart, and I don’t even live in a state with any reported cases.)

Been thinking about this all afternoon.

Either someone is jumping the gun so as to get vaccine preparations going, or there is a lot more going on than is being reported.

Talking with my pediatrician yesterday, and he suspects that this “swine flu” has already been in my area for a while. The flu shot DID NOT work for me and my family this year, nor for many others around here. Heard other docs say the same thing on the news.

My big problem is the WHO which has been milking this thing for all its worth. OTOH the CDC has been a paragon of virtue by giving info without peddling panic.

I bought two boxes of masks on Sunday but had to go to 5 stores to get them. But I have read a few stories about masks lately and all of them slam their efficacy. Even the highly touted N95 and N99 masks were deemed insufficient.

Hand sanitizers I usually hate but found a great hand sanitizing foam made by Lysol [in the soap section]. Unlike others, it does not dry out my hands.

IMO, it’s true about the masks not having the efficacy that may have been implied.

I think masks are better at CONTAINING coughs and sneezes from an already infected person, if they would wear them, than to protect an uninfected person from inhaling whatever is floating around.

But we use them the opposite: uninfected people wear them for less-than-stellar protection, while infected people walk around without masks sneezing into air because they think they don’t need masks because it’s too late for them.

And people these days are SOOOOO RUDE and don’t cover their mouths when they cough or sneeze... They don’t realize that even passing on a “normal” flu with a sneeze can KILL people. (Obviously a big pet peeve of mine.)

Where did you hear that this flu is not being spread person to person? I thought that was one of the scare factors.

From what I understand swine are the host for the ordinary swine flu and swine can host other flu strains at the same time; which is supposed to explain how the different strains combined. I thought the scare factor was because this new strain not only passes from swine to people, but is now passing from person to person and is fatal in some people.

I do think we are not getting the whole story and maybe we are not being told the truth at all. I do get the impression that authorities all over the world seem to be concerned more than you would expect them to be given what the people are being told.

I know; I was just being snarky. Medical companies and health care providers are eligible for it, however. So my company is looking in to ordering it just in case.

Or, as a nation, we are so addled by hyper PC mentality, and kumbaya no borders tranzi globalist mental rubbish, that we simply refuse to do what is right. This is where mainstream post modern liberalism jumped the shark. One face plant, commmmmmming right up!

One interesting thing to ponder. I was trying to buy some N95 masks at a medical supply store in my area today. They are the only masks that guarantee the prevention of the virus from entering your nose and mouth. They were completely SOLD OUT! The owner said the N95 masks would be out of stock for months. She told me that the CDC is stockpiling them...Either someones putting on a good show or they are very concerned about what is possibly coming.

I agree...I think some on here are taking this too lightly. I live in a suburb of Columbus, Ohio, and we already have one confirmed, and a few suspected cases.

The local media is playing it down, somewhat, and will not even say what area of the city that the woman lives in who has the flu.

And thanks to our moronic “President” for his take on this serious sitation tonight. I hope he is basking in his treatment by the “press”, who bows down to him. And a special thanks to the NYSlimes reporter, who asked the hard question...about how “enchanted” he feels, while our military is being thrown to the wolves under his administration.....

Disgusting.

God bless our country. I know He has a plan for us, but I’m not sure what it is at this point. Obama has the fate of my precious loved ones in his hands, and it scares me beyond words.

This map does not reflect all CONFIRMED cases.

Also, keep in mind a LOT of cases, especially mild cases, early cases, AND Third World cases are undiagnosed or misdiagnosed as simple Pneumonia or A-type Influenza ...

I was just making sure. Yesterday someone on one of the threads said her hubby was at the grocery and she called him on the cell phone and told him to add it to the grocery list. That’s when I looked it up. Snarky, lol, I haven’t heard that in a long time, is that like snippy. :-)

WHO stated that ‘All of humanity is under threat’ from a global flu pandemic. Not to go into scare mode, but I did some reading on the spanish flu last night. Apparently the SF came in 3 waves. It was also an H1N1 swine flu that hit in the spring of 1918 in a mild form. It swept again in the fall and winter and that is when it was most deadly. I pray the patterns are not similar.

Because Spain is in a seperate WHO region and their cases are transmitting within the community, they will probably raise the level to 6 soon. We’ll see. What I find strange is why WHO keeps lowering the infetion & death rate, which is different from the CDC.

The state of California has admitted that it’s keeping its own tally and not simply rolling up individual counties’ tallies. In other words they are underreporting. Same deal no doubt at the federal level. At very least, roll up no questions asked reporting could be used for probably case numbers to paint a truer picture and provide a useful leading indicator. This is the big O’s “Katrina” (but this may end up being far worse).

That is what a respiratory therapist I ran into yesterday told me. She expects them to raise it to 6 within the next few days.

Either someone is jumping the gun

or possibly playing up the crisis to push through their nominee (Sebelius) which got approved this week, AND to scare the legislators to approve the massive health care take-over and spend-a-thon.
