General Motors Corp. told its dealers Tuesday that it will force 1,000 to 1,200 underperforming locations to close their doors as the automaker tries to thin dealer ranks to make the remaining outlets more profitable.
GM told the dealers about the plan in a video conference, according to a dealer who spoke on condition of anonymity because the video conference was private. It is part of the company's plan announced Monday to cut more than 2,600 dealers by 2010.
The company expects to lose 500 Hummer and Saturn dealers when those brands close or are sold, and it expects 400 dealers to close voluntarily. Another 500 would be consolidated into other dealerships, according to the dealer.
GM said Monday that it also would eliminate its Pontiac brand, but there are only 27 dealers that sell just Pontiacs, according to the National Automobile Dealers Association. Most Pontiac dealers also sell Buick and GMC vehicles at the same location.

Someone help me out here. Is an auto dealer subsidized by the manufacturer? I always assumed it was like a franchisee. The more, the better.
Sure you will. You just won't be taking delivery of a GM automobile.
Fire Sale!!!
Nor will I - and I was a loyal GM customer.
I have a feeling that we may be able to get cars cheap, if anyone still has a job or there is an economy left.
It takes a certain administrative cost on the part of GM to keep each dealer..plus the larger number of dealers increase the cost of coop advertising, training etc.
They are hoping the the remaining dealers will be larger and stronger, but product support could suffer.
We are selling our GMC 2500 diesel. Will switch to smaller mid size pickup. Or maybe a f150.
I have bought GM exclusively since 1980, but sadly no more. I refuse to buy from a government-run entity.
I won’t either & I just bought a brand new HHR Chev last July. Last car I’m buying under government control.
You mean if there's any left after the UAW gets their cut.

That’s ok. He can save these jobs for a rainy day.
What a shame this is...
My favorite dealer in the area is a Hummer, Saturn & Saab dealer...WHOOPS! They just built a brand new facility about two years ago...I sure hope their attorney was able to cover them on that one!
